Lightbringer by K. D. McEntire

The Never is a place of greys, a world a breath beyond our own, layered just past the memories of yesterday and the fleeting present moment. It is here, in this dismal limbo, that ghosts such as Piotr, Lily, and Elle must sort out an existence, both protecting the children called Lost and themselves from the walking darkness that is the army of rotting Walkers.
Caught between her duty to her calling as the Lightbringer and her concern for her new ghostly friends, Wendy must walk the line between the two worlds, aiding Piotr in his fight against the Walkers as well as searching out the wandering soul of the one who means the most to her. Time, however, is running out and in the end... who will she choose?
I have to say I really enjoyed this book. It is a story that is a mishmash of Peter Pan and Wendy. Just trying to figure out who was who made me smile. Plus, the story itself was strange and unusual which also grabbed my attention (yes, I'll say it... because I myself, am strange and unusual!... lol).

I did enjoy many of the characters, mainly Wendy, Piotr, and Eddie. They were fully fleshed out and interesting to read. Some of the secondary characters, particularly the other "riders" who help the young spirits felt flat to me. Lily was the best fleshed out one (yes, just like Lily in Peter Pan) and she was as wise as she usually is when her character gets personality. Even so, I still would have liked to have been able to grasp more about her personality.

The mystery that surrounds Wendy and her mom as well as what happens to the "Lost"fill this book with intrigue. I did figure out the biggest mystery quite soon, but that did not spoil the hows and whys you learn at the end. I found that quite interesting and fun. I also liked the way Wendy grows and finally learns to think for herself, even though that process was anything but gentle.

I give this book 4 stars. I think if you enjoy a twisted mystery and don't mind the frustration that comes with people feeling their way in the dark toward the light, I feel you will enjoy this alternate Peter Pan tale.
I received this book from the publisher, Pyr and no compensation for my review was given.

  1. Great point that just because you figure out the what, the why's can still be fun to reveal. So happy there was character growth. Glad you enjoyed it so much!

  4. I had no idea that is was related to the Peter Pan story. That in of itself is really interesting. I think I may have to pick this one up and give it a whirl.

  5. I really enjoyed this one too, it felt really different and I thought the world was super interesting. I kept thinking I was right about the villain, and then something would happen and I'd think I was wrong, and it just kept going back and forth for me which I liked:) I agree on the secondary characters though, I wanted a little more from the other Riders!

  6. I like the alternate Peter Pan vibe that is going on. A mystery is always nice and yes who knows (even if YA and I, well you know)

  7. You... strange and unusual? I would have never guessed. ;)

    And glad to know that though the mystery is easy to figure out, it doesn't spoiler the story. I've always admired Wendy from the original PP story. I think it would be neat to see another take on her.

  8. I don't think this is one for me but it does sound super interesting. I would probably leave the teenagers in the dark LOL

  9. I love Peter Pan so a retelling of that story definitely appeals to me. The book blurb is annoyingly vague though. I read it twice and have no idea what it means.

  10. @Alyssa... I had fun with this one. I think the PP mishmash helped make it for me. :)

    @Melliane... It was fun!

    @...Petty... I also thought the cover really was striking too. Made me pay attention. :D

    @animewookie... If you get it, I hope you enjoy it!

    @Rummanah...I didn't either. It was surprising. :D

    @Jenny... I did that too, but as it went on, I wasn't as easily fooled (or that is what I tell myself... LOL). We may get more Rider's stories in the next books.

    @Blodeuedd.. LOL Yea, it still is pretty YA, so keep that in mind. ;D

    @Missie... *giggles* It isn't easy, but you sometimes do feel a step ahead. It is quite different than the original PP story! :D

    @Felicia... LOL Poor kidlets! It is quite YA, but the concept was very interesting!

    @Simcha... It is a ghost/mystery story. It is not like the Peter Pan tale, but the characters are based on them. Whole different situation. :D
