Angel Crawford is a loser.
Living with her alcoholic deadbeat dad in the swamps of southern Louisiana, she's a high school dropout with a pill habit and a criminal record who's been fired from more crap jobs than she can count. Now on probation for a felony, it seems that Angel will never pull herself out of the downward spiral her life has taken.
That is, until the day she wakes up in the ER after overdosing on painkillers. Angel remembers being in an horrible car crash, but she doesn't have a mark on her. To add to the weirdness, she receives an anonymous letter telling her there's a job waiting for her at the parish morgue—and that it's an offer she doesn't dare refuse.
Before she knows it she's dealing with a huge crush on a certain hunky deputy and a brand new addiction: an overpowering craving for brains. Plus, her morgue is filling up with the victims of a serial killer who decapitates his prey—just when she's hungriest!
Angel's going to have to grow up fast if she wants to keep this job and stay in one piece. Because if she doesn't, she's dead meat.
Literally.I decided to take a bit of time and go through my huge tbr pile. I've been wanting to read this for a while now and I wanted it even before it had a title. Dan Dos Santos showed his newest zombie creation for a book and I couldn't wait to read it. Sadly, it took some time to dive in!
Angel is a self proclaimed loser. She is doing everything she can to flush her life down the toilet. She isn't a bad person, but just hasn't had a life full of support or kindness. One night she finds everything has changed. She gets a new job from a mysterious benefactor and has a strange craving for brains. Instead of freaking out, she figures out what is going on with her and really changes her life around. Her new job in the morgue helps her get what she needs and also provides her with a way to help expand her own brains a bit. Yep, it took dying for her to finally "get it" and treat herself with respect.
I enjoyed this tale of a zombie girl who found what she was missing in life. There was a couple of mysteries. One I figured out toward the end, but he other mystery was a bit of a twist for me. I give this zombie tale 4 stars and recommend it to those that normally don't like zombies but do like UF or even mysteries. I can't wait to dive into the next one. Yes, you can say I'm a bit hungry for it. ;)
Great review! This is on my wish list. Hopefully I can get a copy soon because it sounds wonderful. I like a good mystery and I want to read more UF and zombie books. So win-win-win!ReplyDelete
This is a lot of fun. I think you'll enjoy the tongue in cheek. :)Delete
This has also been on my tbr for a long time - maybe I should start to tackle mine as well... :-)ReplyDelete
You tackle it more than I seem to do! :)Delete
I think the reason I haven't picked this one up is because the cover freaks me out. I love it but...there's just something very disturbing about it and the sequel. However, the story does sound fun and Angel seems like a character I could get behind.ReplyDelete
I love the cover. The disturbing part is the best part. LOLDelete
I haven't read a lot about zombies, but this sounds promisingReplyDelete
Then this one might be for you. :)Delete
I'm one of those people who's not a huge zombie fan, but this seems like it has more of a humorous approach, so that will likely work better for me. It's the horror and gore of zombie stories that usually turns me right off, but this one seems a bit different:) Lovely review Melissa!ReplyDelete
This is one that I think is doable for you. More on the wtf aspect of being a zombie. LOLDelete
Oh I have this one, I really really need to start it!ReplyDelete
Yes you do!Delete
I have heard good things about this series but haven't had the strongest urge to pick it up. It might be the covers, I appreciate them being different, but I'm not sure I like them. Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed this, I maybe give it a shot in the future since people seems to enjoy them!ReplyDelete
I love the covers. Makes me giggle. I think you'd enjoy this kind of zombie.Delete
I LOVE THIS COVER! This looks like a great Halloween read! Plus is has ZOMBIES! YAY! Love this review!ReplyDelete
Yes! This cover is a WIN. :DDelete
This series started strongly, but I ended up losing my interest pretty quickly with the second book, which is a shame because I really love Diana Rowland. I liked Angel well enough, but the entire thing seemed somewhat directionless.ReplyDelete
I'm glad you enjoyed this one. Great review!
Oh too bad. I wonder if the 3rd goes back to being strong? Hope so!Delete
Yay I am glad you liked it tooReplyDelete
I really enjoyed this book! Rowland is a real hidden gem.ReplyDelete
This series is on my wishlist and since I love UF, mysteries and zombies I should adore this :) Wonderful review and good for you for digging into that tbr pile!ReplyDelete
I had thought about trying this one but the plot isn't my thing. I do like her demon Kara Gillian series though.ReplyDelete
I really want to get my hands on this one. All the reviews I've seen for it are positive.ReplyDelete
I've been wanting to read this after seeing some positive reviews, and I'm SO happy to hear that you had fun with this and recommend it. I really need to make time for it now! Lovely review :-)ReplyDelete
I really don't like zombie books, but I just finished my first one, Married with Zombies and liked it. So perhaps this one is not as bad as the cover ...ReplyDelete
I've got to get to this one. It's right here at my finger tips. But darn time keeps denying me all I want these days. :)ReplyDelete
