Dark Kiss (Nightwatchers #1) by Michelle Rowan

I don't do dangerous. Smart, über-careful, ordinary Samantha-that's me. But I just couldn't pass up a surprise kiss from my number-one unattainable crush. A kiss that did something to me... something strange. Now I feel hungry all the time, but not for food. It's like part of me is missing-and I don't know if I can get it back. Then there's Bishop. At first I thought he was just a street kid, but the secrets he's keeping are as intense as his unearthly blue eyes. If he's what I think he is, he may be the only one who can help me. But something terrifying is closing in, and the one chance Bishop and I have to stop it means losing everything I ever wanted and embracing the darkness inside me.... NIGHTWATCHERS When angels and demons must work together, something beyond evil is rising...
Okay, I have to admit, I'm in love with this cover. I mean I don't always love angel covers, but the darkness with the brooding guy on the cover? WIN! So you know I HAD to read it.

This book attempts to be a bit different in YA. It not only had angels and demons working together, it also introduces zombies. You don't get many zombies in YA. For those who avoid zombie books because of the gore, don't worry, there is very little. In fact, in this book you only see one zombie even though you know more exist.

I did like the main character of Samantha. She did seem to have an overblown sense of right and wrong, but it really works for her in this situation. She is also very compassionate and tries to learn from her mistakes. Her romantic interest was Bishop. He was hot, but unfortunately because of his situation you only get to know him in pieces. Still, swoon-worthy, I think we will get to know more about Bishop in the coming series and I think he will become more swoon-worthy as we get to know this non-perfect angel. However, I admit in this book, the demon Kraven steals the show and I really want to know more about him. Not because he is a bad boy (I mean demon!) but because he has a hidden side to him that is good.

I give this book 3 stars. I am curious as to where the author takes these characters. Mainly because the characters are all wonderfully flawed and good/evil isn't so easy to distinguish. The romance was a bit on the insta-love category and her parents were in the absent category, but the ending promises new beginnings and new twists yet to come.

  1. I want to but don't want to read this series. I am not sure dang it! I love the zombies in YA thing but ughhhhhhhhhhhhhh with the parents in the absent category. I keep telling myself I am just not the YA target audience LOL

  2. I agree with you about the cover, mean and moody, a fallen angel I'm presuming.

  3. Hrm..not sure about this one. The description isn't really grabbing me. I think I'll wait to you review book 2 before considering it. Angels, demons, and I don't generally get along for the most part. LOL!

  4. Wonderfully flawed characters you say? Sign me up, those are my favorite kind. And while I'm sure I'll have a little crush on Bishop, Kraven sounds like my kind of character:) Looking forward to reading this one!

  7. I think I'm actually with Felicia on this one. I'm not quite sure this book is for me, though I have to admit your review does make me more interested in it than I originally was. I haven't had a good track record with YA angel books so far, and while I haven't sworn off reading more, my past experiences always make me a little hesitant to pick up another one.

  8. I grabbed this on NG and now I am not as excitted to read it, most of the reviews are lukewarm. Yours was more promising, I knew there were angels and demons but no idea that there was zombies. I am intrigued by all the different types of characters. I will be reading this soon and I will come back and compare my notes with yours :)

  9. Okay, I'll admit that I swooned over the cover. I love it. Darkly delicious, but I don't know if I could wait to get to know Bishop. I'm an all or nothing type of girl. LOL

Then again, flawed characters are impossible to resist.

  11. The romance thing in YA books seems to be a thing, along with the parents. Sounds like the demon guy is awesome though. :) Thank you!

  12. I felt the same way about the book. It captured me but it really didn't hold me you know. I'm still curious too as to where the characters go.

  13. I thought this was the second in a series so I didn't grab it from NG. I couldn't figure it out. I'm glad you read it. NOW I know what's going on!
Hmm, actually sounds a little interesting. Zombies with demons and angels. I'm very over angels, but flawed angels (Again, Patch is always the exception to the angel rule) and demons being good? Sounds really confusing and interesting.
I like it! Very good review teasing us into Kraven (cravin'). I might read these series if you like the next one.

  14. That is one dark and breathtaking cover - but I confess that the name of the demon, Kraven, sounds very intriguing as well.

  15. you're right it's a great cover, but I don't know why, I wasn't very attracted by the book... I don't have many books I love about angels. I think I'll wait to learn more about the second book.
