Every flame begins with a spark.
Ashline Wilde is having a rough sophomore year. She’s struggling to find her place as the only Polynesian girl in school, her boyfriend just cheated on her, and now her runaway sister, Eve, has decided to barge back into her life. When Eve’s violent behavior escalates and she does the unthinkable, Ash transfers to a remote private school nestled in California’s redwoods, hoping to put the tragedy behind her. But her fresh start at Blackwood Academy doesn’t go as planned. Just as Ash is beginning to enjoy the perks of her new school—being captain of the tennis team, a steamy romance with a hot, local park ranger—Ash discovers that a group of gods and goddesses have mysteriously enrolled at Blackwood…and she’s one of them. To make matters worse, Eve has resurfaced to haunt Ash, and she’s got some strange abilities of her own. With a war between the gods looming over campus, Ash must master the new fire smoldering within before she clashes with her sister one more time… And when warm and cold fronts collide, there’s guaranteed to be a storm.Okay, can you tell that I LOVE mythology retellings in modern settings yet? Oh and this one has so many different types of mythological gods from different cultures. So much WIN! I have to admit when I did start reading the book, I didn't think I'd like Ash, but as I got to know her and how she viewed things in such an mature way, I just enjoyed her character so much. She was fully herself as a human, she just needed to find her way as a goddess. This is Ash's POV story and I'm so glad I got to meet her.
Now here is where it is hard for me to continue this review. Why? Because I want to spill so many of it's secrets. Mostly because you get Zuni, Egyptian, Norse, Shinto, and Polynesian mythological gods. I suspect we will also see more in the coming books as well. I can't wait. I just want to delve into talking about all these myths. Yes, I could to an extent, but I cannot say what I want! Ah, that is the frustrating part of this book for me. Keeping my mouth (and fingers) shut! lol (hey, no comments! lol)
What I will say is that this is a fun ride especially for those like me who love mythology of different cultures. The main story is satisfied within the book, but questions are left open for the next. So, it isn't one of those horrible cliffies where you fall off into an abyss; oh, but you will be wanting more, I assure you. I give this book 4 1/2 stars. If you love snark (you know who you are...) and mythology... this is a must read!
Snark example:
I was so disappointed by the Beiber part, I have to say... ;D
I received this book from S&S Galley Grab and no compensation was given
I've been watching Knight's videos and they always crack me up!
ReplyDeleteI'm excited about that unicorn ride (and the centerfold). JS.
Can't wait to read Wildfire... opps I mean Weldifire. Did I get it right?
;P
I love mythology retellings as well. Unfortunately, I have been disappointed in some of the ones I've read recently. Wildefire is just what I may need now! Zuni, Egyptian, Norse, Shinto, and Polynesian mythological gods?! Wow!
ReplyDeleteI am glad to hear that the book doesn't have the sort of cliffhanger ending which leaves you hanging in the middle.
I love mythology in books :D Every time I read one I feel like writing. I mean I do know my Norse gods, obviously. And then I could mix in some Finnish and Celtic ones
