Happy New Year?

Ugh. So much loss. Not just in the entertainment group, but I noticed a lot of personal loss with people that were important to them. The election. Ugh again. Actually I sort of predicted who would win by a sort of joke. I was wondering if there was a reason for all this loss because Drumpf will win. WHY did I have to say that?

I have to also say one of the hardest entertainment losses was recent. Carrie Fisher was my big one. She was Princess Leia to most of us. That character was the first princess character I knew of to save herself. She was the first one I noticed to also save everyone else. She lost everyone important to her and yet she forged on and led a rebellion. That character was one of the main reasons I loved Star Wars. Plus, if you heard Carrie Fisher in her forthrightness and strength in what she advocated and revealed about her life, I'd have to now say she could be the only one to play that character right. She would be the only one to get that character. Her mom also had a bit of that so losing Debbie Reynolds was so sad too. Geeze 2016! I just needed to see more gumption coming from strong women like they were... especially in the 4 years to come.

And for those that don't celebrate, just mention what you like to listen or watch at this time of the year. Usually we have our own traditions. I have family who is Christian, who don't celebrate at all, and who are different religions. I know several religious holidays are observed at this time. Not excluding anyone, but just making a typical US list of what usually goes on during this time of the  year (many of my non-Christian family enjoys some of those classic holiday films and I have gotten suggestions from them as well). Again, please share if you want of your own traditions both religious and secular! I love to either be reminded of things I may have forgotten or learn something new!

I admit I tend to lean toward the unusual during the holidays. I do like the feel good type, but my faves tend to be a bit odd in nature.

by Molly Harper

It's Christmas in Half-Moon Hollow and newly turned vampire Iris Scanlon-Calix wants to make Gigi's first visit home from college as normal and special as possible. It's taken months for Iris to work up the nerve to spend time around her baby sister after her vampire transition, so she enlists help from Jane Jameson and Company to keep her blood-thirst under control and assure Gigi's safety. 

Gigi, on the other hand, has problems of her own, including the demise of her relationship with high school sweetheart, Ben, and a looming job interview with Ophelia Lambert, the scariest potential employer in the Hollow. And then there's the small matter of the handsome, frustrating vampire who keeps appearing in Gigi's peripheral vision, then disappearing before she can talk to him. 

Can the Scanlon sisters negotiate romantic problems, vampire politics, and Christmas cookie disasters and enjoy a relatively normal holiday?

This novella is fun to listen to and you don't have to really have read the series before diving into this one. Granted I was familiar with the world this one inhabits so I was not completely lost. This one is good for those that want a bit of "red" with their holiday treat as well as some laughs.

Arts and Crafts Corner: Holiday Crafting

I've been complaining that the holidays come WAY too soon, but in crafting it can begin as early as July (Christmas in July... sound familiar?) to get everything done. I've been doing a few things and I thought I'd share.

 The first thing is actually for me. Had to try this out and see how it works. 

EOS holder:

This holds those EOS lip balms. I could not resist this one. Too funny! :)

I had mentioned that I used the glow in the dark embroidery on my wreath. I also did that to these unicorn skelanimals. I tried to get a pic of them. If you squint just right... you may be able to see it (you might have to click on the pic to make it bigger)...

I also made some key FOBs for the vet's office:

For the vets, vet techs and office workers. They get to decide who gets what... although some are more obvious than others. :)

And last for today is some key FOBs I made for a cousin and his boys. They love the ninja turtles and so I made all the colors. They get to chose who gets what color. :)

So, anyone crafting for the holidays already? I'm not done yet... *wipes sweat off of brow* ;) Will have more of these posts as I start to take pics. :) I'll try to do better pics.

RIP, Music, Crafts, and Martin Luther King Jr. Day

What is with the end of last year and the beginning of this one? I've noticed that a lot of people have lost family members (so much ((HUGS)) if you need it even if you haven't lost someone, I'm sure you know someone who has so you might need one anyway) and we have lost some great talent. Natalie Cole, Lemmy from Motorhead, David Bowie and Alan Rickman. The ones that were male and seemed to be 69 (Lemmy JUST turned 70). So surreal. We need more creativity and love in this world right now, not less. So, grim reaper... knock it off!

My thoughts:
I haven't read the Half Moon Hollow books yet, but I have read the Jane Jameson series. The Half Moon Hollow series is the offshoot of Jane Jameson so I knew most of the characters going into this audio. I do suggest you at least read/listen to the series in order since it was obvious things happened right before this book. However, since I knew almost everyone there I didn't feel lost at all.

What I loved about this audio and what I love about al Molly Harper books is her humor. LOVED seeing a newly turned vampire who cannot eat solid food try to make the perfect Christmas dinner with all of the trimmings for her sister, Gigi who is still human. The gatherings and the presents they gave each other was a hoot. There is also a hint of what is to come. That is where I was frustrated. Okay, this is a novella, but that tease was just mean! Yea, she got me and I'll have to either listen to them all or read this series. I'm hooked.

I give this book 3 1/2 stars. I really enjoyed my holiday time here with Gigi and Iris, but the tease was almost too much to take. :) I also enjoyed Amanda Ronconi's narration and will happily listen to them all if she is narrating them. I recommend it to those that love a humorous get together and want to laugh at an unconventional family.

Surprise! Yes, I did read a holiday book... during the holidays! LOL

A Christmas Carol and all it's incarnations (Scrooged! for one...) have always been my favorite holiday kind of read. I've always said that I love a book where the character grows and that book's main message is about growth. So, what happened after? How is Tiny Tim all grown up supposed to have an epiphany? I mean he wasn't a horrid boy and in this incarnation he isn't a horrid adult either. In fact he is a doctor and surgeon. His skills are renown as is his kindness. However, he has lost his way a little bit and fallen into practice with a doctor as mean as Scrooge was at the beginning of A Christmas Carol. So, Tim needs a little push, a small shove to correct his course in life. Scrooge is now likened to a guardian angel who helps, but it is the actions of Tim himself that sets things to right. Scrooge is only the one presenting opportunities not ultimatums.

I really enjoyed myself with this story. It was nice following Tim and how he felt responsible in returning the favor Scrooge presented to him. I also enjoyed his shy romance. We are also not without an adorable child to complete the scene. While this isn't the big epiphany we get with Scrooge, we still get some redemption for Tim as he finds his way back to himself and happiness. Besides, a big epiphany wasn't needed here.

I give this book 5 stars. If you are looking for a sweet read that completes a circle started with A Christmas Carol, then I suggest this book. It is a great holiday read.

Now it Feels More Like the Holidays!

My aunt just visited and I got my first taste of the Holidays! She makes Christmas potica every year and I just ate a big ol' piece! This holiday treat is a tradition in the area where I live. It is delicious and converts anyone who tastes it into wanting it every year. It is a Slovenian dish which fits perfectly in the multicultural area I live. A common recipe from Cooking.com is as follows:

Total Time:  3 Hours 40 Minutes Yield:  Makes 2 loaves (8 servings each) From central Europe, probably Yugoslavia, potica is a dense, sweet nut pastry cut from tightly rolled loaves. Small cracks often appear on the surface of the loaves as they bake, but they in no way detract from the beautifully golden brown crust or the mouth-watering flavor.  INGREDIENTS For Bread: 2-2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 package active dry yeast 1/3 cup milk 1/4 cup butter or margarine 2 tablespoons sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 eggs For Filling: 3 cups ground walnuts 3/4 cup sugar 1/4 cup butter or margarine, softened 1/4 cup honey 1 slightly beaten egg 3 tablespoons milk 1 teaspoon finely shredded lemon or orange peel (optional) 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
DIRECTIONS FOR BREAD: In a medium mixing bowl combine 1 cup of the flour and the yeast; set aside. In a medium saucepan heat 1/3 cup milk, 1/4 cup butter or margarine, 2 tablespoons sugar, and the salt till mixture is warm (120 to 130 degrees F) and butter or margarine is almost melted. Add to flour mixture. Add 2 eggs. Beat with an electric mixer on low to medium speed for 30 seconds, scraping bowl constantly. Beat on high speed for 3 minutes. Using a wooden spoon, stir in as much of the remaining flour as you can. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead in enough of the remaining flour to make a moderately soft dough that is smooth and elastic (3 to 5 minutes total). Shape into a ball. Place in a lightly greased bowl; turn once. Cover and let rise in a warm place till double (1 to 1 1/4 hours). FOR FILLING: In a large mixing bowl stir together walnuts, 3/4 cup sugar, 1/4 cup butter or margarine, honey, 1 slightly beaten egg, 3 tablespoons milk, peel (if desired), and vanilla. Set aside. Punch dough down. Cover and let rest for 10 minutes. Meanwhile, lightly grease two 7 1/2x3 1/2x2-inch or 8x4x2-inch loaf pans. Cover a large surface (at least 3x3 feet) with a floured cloth. On the cloth, roll dough into a 15-inch square. Cover and let rest for 10 minutes. Then roll dough into a 30x20-inch rectangle. TO ASSEMBLE: Put dough in half lengthwise, forming two 30x10-inch sheets. Spread the filling evenly over the surface of the dough, keeping to within 1 inch of the edges. Using the cloth as a guide, roll up jelly-roll style, starting from one short side. Pinch seams and ends to seal. Place loaves, seam-sides down, in the prepared loaf pans. Cover and let rise in a warm place till nearly double (45 to 60 minutes). Bake in a preheated 325 degrees F oven for 45 to 50 minutes, or till golden brown. Remove from pans; cool on a wire rack.

Now all I need is some homemade tamales and I'm set. :D 

I also got something in the mail from StephanieD, at the Misfit Salon. I had won the Lady Cottington's Pressed Fairy Book 10 3/4 Anniversary Edition! Thanks! It also has a DVD I'll have to fire up now that the snow is falling. Just cuddle up and watch! If you love faries like I do, then this is one you will enjoy. And don't worry, if you haven't seen the book there is a forward by the RSPCF (The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Faries) which assures that no fairie was hurt or injured by the making of the book. The prints were psychic impressions done without injury to the farie. So, no worries. :)

A Fun Holiday Post!

I've read several posts about favorite holiday shows, books, movies and I really agree with some of the choices I've seen (especially the one with the miser brothers). Anyway, thought I'd share at least a couple of mine.

One is the Nightmare Before Christmas. I still love the stop motion animation. Earlier this year I heard that Danny Elfman had redone the soundtrack with artists like Korn, Flyleaf, Amy Lee, and the American Rejects. I was hoping that it would show up in the movie itself, but no, it's just the soundtrack to the movie. Someone did do a pretty good job of inserting at least one song into a scene.

My favorite holiday story has always been "A Christmas Carol". No surprise, I'm sure. :) My favorite adaptation of this story is "Scrooged" with Bill Murray.

Of course, the one with Alastair Sim is my second favorite (just don't inform my mother of that fact since we continue to argue which one is best... lol).



So, Happy Holidays... I found this on youtube. It's the full movie with Seymour Hicks from 1935. One of the first adaptations of a Christmas Carol to a movie. If you want to stay and watch. I'll serve up the hot chocolate and some popcorn. Get comfy and enjoy!
