Fairy Metal Thunder Read a Long: Week 1



This weeks questions come from Missie @ The Unread Reader

Questions for Chapter 1-6 of Fairy Metal Thunder:

1. At the beginning of the story, the Assorted Zebras are just a garage band, but they are expecting to make it big. Who knows, you just might find yourself at one of their concerts someday. Until then, show me your favorite concert t-shirt. It could be a picture of a concert you actually attended or a pic of a vintage tee of your favorite band. Be sure to tell me the story behind the tee.

I don't have any pictures from concerts I've attended... and I don't have any of my tees available for me to take a pic. Plus, I refused to buy any of the big name shirts ever since they reached $30+ for a flimsy one. BUT I will show you my fave place to attend a concert:

Unfortunately I wasn't at this concert, but it is at Red Rocks. Such a great place for a concert. They reportedly loved the venue but couldn't play there again since it is fairly small and they got big shortly after this was out. Poor guys. :D

2. Jason’s mom forces him to agree to do some yard work for Mrs. Dullahan, which wouldn’t be so bad if she wasn’t rumored to be a witch. Tell me about the worst chore you were ever forced to do. Who make you do it? Bonus points if you have a picture to share of you doing the dirty work. 

I think I shared this in the other read-a-long. It was fielding calls on a phone operations center that should have stayed in the 20s that my dad forced upon me. Hm... well how about cleaning my dog after an accident when my dog got very sick (and don't worry, I was too busy to take pics, so relax...). That was a no brainer though that it had to be done. I just hated that they were sick. :(

3. Uh oh! There seems to be a jewelry thief in the neighborhood. Have you have had anything stolen from you? Or have you ever lost something precious? Did you ever find it? Make a Reward if Found poster for the stolen or lost item. Convince us to find it for you. Make the reward good!

Yes I did. My parents had this cat before I came along. When I was born the kitty took me over and I was hers! I have lots of pics of me and the cat, but my scanner is on the fritz so I can't show those... but my reward poster is (pic is unknown source and not my kitty):

No, we never found her and we are certain someone took her. :(

4. In Faerie, Jason declares himself as Jason the Guy Who Wants That Necklace Back. Weird, but then again every name has a meaning. What does your name mean? What is the origin? Do you go by any kind of nicknames? How did you get that nickname? 

Melissa means HONEYBEE! (common Missie... you KNOW that!) :D

Nicknames: Missy, Mel, Meli, Miss Miss which are variations on my name. I've had others but none really stuck.

5. When Jason gets home from his all night adventures through Fairy, his parents unfairly ground him for a month! Care to share a time you were grounded by your parents for no good reason?

Oh I was a precious innocent child. Any and ALL punishments were for no good reason. *cough*

 This is an off-shoot series from her main Shadow series. While I do believe you could read this one without having to read the others, I strongly you read the others. For no other reason other than they rock. Plus, it is so much better to know the side players in this story. *sigh* And yes, I still hold a candle (forgive the pun) for Shadowman even now. ;)

As with the other series, this book is a mix of faerie tale (The Little Match Girl in this case) and new mythology. As with the other books Erin Kellison usually puts in some sort of artistic endeavor. Either a character wields the creative spark, or in this case, revolves around a painting described as the Fall of Magic. It shows how angels and mages are on opposite sides when trying to rule humanity. I just love that touch in this series.

This tale is specifically about Kaye a mage who came to her power late and Jack a warrior angel who is strictly business. Of course plans go awry when emotions are involved. Not just the unexpected emotions between our two main characters but those having to do with both Kaye and Jack's past. They both have things to settle within themselves before they can move on to a future together. And with warring and conniving mages and angels who refuse to believe any mage can be good, will they be able to handle all that is thrown at them? Guess you'll have to read it to find out. *evil laugh* Oh please... like you didn't see that coming. ;) Many twists within will have you guessing at how they could come together... if at all possible. :D

I give this book 4 1/2 stars. It's an excellent edition to the Shadow series. I really enjoyed this romance between the warrior angel and a powerful mage. The balance of emotions as well as adventure combine for one fun read. I recommend it to those who love a dark PNR. This book is out now! Go get it... go!

My Book Boyfriend

My book boyfriend is from Erin Kellison's newest book in the Shadow series Fire Kissed (review tomorrow). In the book we have Jack Bastion. A dark haired, light eyed angel who doesn't care for mages at all. So, having to work with one... especially one that is so independent is quite annoying to him. Of course, being a warrior angel does not make him immune to Kaye's charmes and despite quite a bit of warring with himself, he finds himself longing for her touch. However Shadow (which mages are full of) is anathema to angel's light so how could he deal with it?

My answer? Forget the mage... I'm right here! ;)

Oh and who could I see playing this alpha angel with love that runs deep?

Shadow Touch (Shadow #2.5) and Shadow Play (Shadow #3.5) by Erin Kellison

Shadow Touch (Shadow #2.5) 
Magic 
It is bleeding into our world, bringing with it banshees, wraiths, fae from the twisting forests of Twilight. But Elllie’s problem is a very different kind of phenomenon... 
Shadow 
It ought to be attached to her; instead it has a life of its own. And her dark mirror image is a wild thing, willfully seducing the very man Ellie hoped could help.

Cam has devoted his career to exploring the boundaries between this world and the Hereafter. But nothing could prepare him for the mischief and mayhem of a soul split in two. 
Surrender 
Who will give in first: the man struggling to unite two halves of one fascinating female; the shadow fighting for freedom to experience the thrill of every emotion; or the woman who is about to discover her own deepest desires?
Although this novella is #2.5, it really is an offshoot of the main series. This one we are introduced to Cam and Ellie. One is a scientist and the other is desperately seeking help. She has an unusual problem.  Her Shadow is separate from the rest of her. Still a part of her, but able to act on it's own. She captures the attention of the scientist she sought out for help and he ends up falling for the woman with the unusual problem.

This is a quick read and fun. You could read it as a stand a lone, but I don't suggest you do. The world has already been established for you and that allows the book to take off for the reader. It also brings a question for you... what would you do if the id part of yourself was separate and in full view of everyone you meet? Could you handle that unfettered part of yourself? I'm so not going there in my review (sorry.. heh) but I think Ellie did a great job of handling the situation.

I give this novella 4 stars. It's a great introduction to these characters in the Shadow world.

Shadow

Dr. Cam Kalamos has dedicated his life to studying its strange properties, but nothing is more intriguing than a woman whose soul is split in half, one part under her control, one part bent on...

How can he resist the lure of a lover with no inhibitions and an insatiable desire to possess him? Both Ellie and her shadow want Cam, but there is an innocent child to be rescued from the forest and the strange fae creatures of... 
Twilight 
Love, loyalty, betrayal—which will rule? As Ellie sends her other self into the darkness, there is only one certainty: Trusting in shadows is a dangerous game.
This novella is actually a follow up from the first novella I just reviewed above. It involves the same characters only now they are given their first assignment at Segue. They are to help a woman take back her son from a vortex that opened up while they were hiking. This story is a version of the changeling stories of old.

I think I like Ellie and Cam even more so in this story. I really enjoyed their relationship and laughed at Ellie's Shadow who seems to be able to interact with Ellie in her head more. I also like Ellie finding out a bit more about herself and what she can and cannot do with her new power. I wouldn't mind visiting them again if another novella or even novel comes out. I really would love to see even more growth of Ellie into an even stronger woman. I give this short interesting story 4 stars. I really recommend both of these novellas for those that love PNR and the Shadow series.
