Tell Me Something Tuesday: Novellas

Tell Me Something Tuesday, a meme started by CambriaHebert, but now hosted here on Rainy Day Ramblings. It is a chance to get to know your fellow bloggers by sharing fun stuff, discussions and more. Grab the question and post your answer on your blog and link up! Have fun!

Question:
Novellas...how do you feel about the current trend of novellas? What do you like about them? What don't you like?

I like novellas when they are a part of an overall series. I like it when it fills in the gaps. Books like:
Nice holiday theme. Can be read as a stand alone, but much better within the series (Bigtime series for this one). Sometimes these are fun! (Review)

(Review) This was a gap filler  (#5.5) for those of us itching for the next book.

Same with:
(Review) And trust me, I do want that next book (this one is #2.5), but this one helped...

Then you have stories that only serve to frustrate you because it is NOT part of a series and you desperately want it to be one! :D
(Review)
Which was part of an anthology (as some of the novellas you can get now were) and also leads me to think of:
(Review) In which many of us are now begging Ann Aguirre to make Thistle and Thorne a real series.
(other anthologies I've reviewed)

Of course there are still novellas I do want to read... like those that give us the POV of another character:
Yep, it's Logan's POV (I really need this one... yes, need LOL).

So, all in all I don't LOVE novellas, but they do serve their purpose. :) I enjoy them but usually end up wanting more. What about you? Novellas? Yea or nay?

  1. I love novellas! I love the bridge ones (I hear you on Spartan's Frost) and I love stand alones (Yes can we please have a series for Thistle and Thorn!!!) I have some series that are all novellas that come out once a month. I love those too because I'm so busy I don't always have time to read a 400 page book at night. But give me an 80 page novella that ends solidly, I'm good to go. I feel like I read a nice long chapter in a book. I love them! Makes me feel accomplished.

So do we start a petition somewhere for Thistle and Thorn or is there a FB page where we sign our names....

    1. Just tell me where to sign and I'm there. :D

I do agree... 80pgs really makes you feel like you read at warp speed. :D

  2. Oh, yes, I was really grateful to Jenn Bennett for Leashing the Tempest! Obviously everyone needs more Jupe! And Thistle & Thorne! I want a series too. I simply adored Mari and Thorne, and the world has so much potential. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

    1. Can we get the next Jupe novel??? LOL

  3. Because there are so many and, lately, they're usually connected to a world I love, I've read a ton of novellas. I both love and hate them -- they're like a snack that doesn't fill you up. Yummy but I want more!

  4. I am only a fan if I know the characters ahead of time. I have tried two more anthologies that weren't attached to series and it just doesn't work for me. I so could hit my numbers if I could just get over this LOL

    1. Try the Thistle and Thorne one. You will get over it, but will want more. :D

  6. I don't mind the odd Novella. I agree with you that they can be a wonderful addition to an established series - like an Easter Egg on a DVD, but they have to be VERY well written for a stand alone one to work! :-)

    1. So true! Oh and I do agree.... the easter egg analogy is perfect!

  7. I never love them as much, and I HATE prequel novellas

  8. I didn't think about all the ones in anthologies. I usually hate reading anthologies because there are some great ones and then a bunch of not so great. I personally like prequels especially when they are free. I will definitely be on the lookout for the Mythos novella from Logan's POV! Thanks so much for weighing in! Great answer!

  9. I also love the bridge novellas that tide me over while I'm waiting for a sequel. Roar & Liv was a good one. I think prequel novellas are strange, especially when they come out before the book releases. I have no idea if I'm going to like the book, so why would I waste time/$ on a prequel? I've heard good things about Spartan Frost; when I get to that series I'll be sure to read it. Great discussion this week!

  10. Oh you know I love my novellas. Yes, I love them in a series when they fit in the holes or fill holes we didn't even realize were there.

I do also love them in anthologies, and yes, many of them I want more in the worlds with the characters. lol. Maybe that will become a new trend as well? Novella series. :)

  11. I do like the ones that are from a series and lend a different POV. Destroy Me was great that way. I also enjoy EJ Wesley's novella series (as you know) because they are pretty complete stories in each one.

  12. YES! I totally want the Spartan. I miss Logan sooooo much :)

  13. I have a love hate relationship with them, on one hand i wish they were incorporated into the books themselves and on the other I enjoy reading them. Thanks for all the lovely comments while I was away

  14. I never liked novellas because they usually end to abruptly and you never get anymore but I started reading more when I was in a slump.

I liked that I could finish in an hour - there is usually a happy ending. Even if it did leave me wanting for more.

I'm with you - I like the ones that add to an already existing series or bridge the gap while you're waiting for the next book.

  15. I am happy when find a novella by an author whose series has a looooong wait in between full length books, some of those are quite good fillers with secondary characters finally getting to shine and yes adding to the overall goodness of the series itself too.

Oh how it would be so wonderful if Jeaniene Frost and Ann Aguirre could get behind those novellas they graced us with and develop full length works that would be picked up to sell because the characters are just some we neeeed to know more about!!!!!
