Hot Blooded (Jessica McClain #2) by Amanda Carlson

It hasn't been the best week for Jessica McClain.

Her mate has been kidnapped by a Goddess hell-bent on revenge --- but Jessica is playing for keeps.

Because she's the only female werewolf in town...it comes with its own set of rules...and powers.

Aided by two vamps, two loyal Pack members, and one very reluctant human, Jessica must rescue her man while coming to terms with what being a wolf really means.

All in a day's work for a girl.

The second novel in the Jessica McClain series is a full on action adventure featuring one angry Goddess and plenty of monsters, demons, and a few newly risen beasties...

This book picks up right after the last book left off. It is the journey you were expecting and it did not disappoint. Lots of action and adventure in harrowing circumstances. In fact it was nearly never ending. It makes sense since the evil Selene wouldn't give up her prize easily. You also get some more insight into the world in which they live and you are also learning with the rest of them. Most of the things weren't known to the weres because they had no need to learn them. The group realizes now that is a mistake. So, I suspect we will be getting even more in depth world learning as the series progresses.

We also learn more about Jessica's abilities and we meet more secondary characters. Danny is the comic relief and I can't wait to see more of him. We also meet some vampires and we really get to know the detective, Ray who gave her hell in the last book. With those characters you appropriately like the ones you are supposed to and even warm up to the others except the evil ones. :) My only complaint is that you know no more about Rourke in this book than in the first. Very frustrating but also something to look forward!

I give this adventure 4 stars. I enjoyed it and it reminded me a lot of the Persephone Alcmedi series I recently reviewed. Both have a strong intelligent female with great power who is prophesied to bring justice to the world. I'm enjoying that angle. One warning.... this book also ends with a sort of cliffie. I actually don't like this. The adventure is complete, but the start of the next series is the ending of this one as it was in the first book. I would have liked it better if she stopped one chapter back. I would have still craved that next book (without frustration!). This book is out today!
I received this book from the publisher and NetGalley and no compensation for my review was given.

  1. Great review.

Is it just me that thinks the cover has a somewhat Spanish look to it? For some reason it puts me in mind of Flamenco dancers.

  2. Oh, yes! I loved all the boys, too, especially Danny! He was great (hey, Amanda! Can we get a spin-off with him? Or maybe a novella, at the least?!?).

Maybe in the next one, we'll learn who and WHAT Rourke really is!

  4. I really need to read these Melissa! I know Rourke is largely absent in this second book which makes me sad because I love romance, but I still think I'll enjoy being with Jessica and her motley crew:) Boo on the cliffhanger ending, but it doesn't sound like it was a tear-your-hair-out kind of cliffhanger.

    1. I was sad about that too. It just needed to be ended one chapter before. The last chapter belongs with the next book is all... :)

  12. I don't know why but I didn't really like the first book. I didn't hate it or anything but I guess with all the amazing reviews I had really high expectations. I'm wondering if I should give it another shot.

  13. Oh, so now I'm even more sure that I need to read Persephone asap! I really enjoy Jessica's adventures. It bothered me a bit too that we didn't get to see more of Rourke in this one and that we didn't learn more about him, but everything else was awesome.
    Great review!
