Reining In by Dawn Judd

Reining In (Volume 1)From Goodreads:
After witnessing the murder of one of her dearest friends, Khalida finds herself caught between doing what she knows is right and letting go of her past. With the help of the Network, an organization created to keep her secrets buried, Khalida will battle enemies as old as time. But will the secrets of her past destroy everything she knows and loves? Soon, another friend is facing his death, and she will have to save him. Others will follow, and she will have to make the hardest decision of her life. There is only one way to save her friends from this enemy. As she races against time, Khalida will learn that sometimes your past comes back to haunt you, even when you are a vampire.
Khalida is one of the most human vampires I have read about. Often you see vampires having to mimic their "human-ness" and hide their preternatural strength around other mortals so their secret of their immortality doesn't escape. While Khalida is concerned with privacy and secrecy, she has very little trouble blending in with those who do not know she is a vampire. She is also very emotional instead of being so distant from everyone. It was something I had to mention first since that part in particular was so unlike many vampire books in current circulation. I found it refreshing.

As for this book in particular, it is a great UF from beginning to end. It starts out with the potential death of a 90 year old friend who chose to cherish his mortality. After his surprising murder she finds herself and those she loves at the attention of an old enemy. Secrets surface and the very Network she established to hide at least one of those secrets also faces destruction. So, to protect everything in her life she must face the horrifying truth and deal with the consequences. This book ends in a bang.

I give this book 4 1/2 stars. It is a great ride from beginning to end.

I was given this ebook by the author and no compensation for my review was given.

Now, this is the great news. This ebook is only 2.99!

  7. It's also not a novella, but a full novel. Seriously, it is a great price for the story. :)

  8. That is refreshing - so often vampires are depicted as inhuman therefore inhumane and detached from humanity.
