New school year, same old problems . . .

At Mythos Academy, everyone knows exactly who I am: Rory Forseti, Spartan girl and the daughter of Reapers.

Even though I fought alongside my cousin Gwen Frost to save the mythological world from Loki and his evil Reapers of Chaos, I’m still the most hated girl at the academy because of all the horrible things my parents did. I had hoped that this school year would be different, but the other kids just won’t let me forget about my parents.

But something strange is going on at the Colorado Academy. First, I run into a Viking guy who dislikes me more than most. Then I notice some odd artifacts in the Library of Antiquities. And worst of all, I start hearing rumors about a new group of Reapers who can summon mythological monsters.

I might be the most hated girl at Mythos Academy, but I’m also the only one who can save it . . .
My thoughts:

This is the first book in the spin-off series of the Mythos Academy books with Gwen Frost as the heroine. In this book, Rory Forseti, Gwen's cousin who we briefly met, is the heroine in this series set in Colorado. Since I'm a fan of Jennifer Estep's writing and also a fan of anything set in CO I knew this was a total win for me. I was correct. I enjoyed my time at the CO Mythos Academy. For those that have not read the main series, I do suggest it, but I think you could read this book first. I still think that you would feel as if you are missing something and you would be right. I really loved that first series and I do think you will as well.

If you are familiar with this world you will be easily transported there in this book. It does have the same feel as the other series and the same kind of adventure. We get a more seasoned warrior in this book but she also is inexperienced in life having just felt betrayal from people she would never expect. Recovering from that, bearing the bullying at school and tempted with a choice on almost every level we find ourselves engaged with Rory and rooting for her from the beginning. We are also introduced to a new talking sword. As much as I did like Babs, she hasn't quite stolen the spotlight from Vic just yet. However, the griffins have totally stolen my heart.

Btw, can I have a griffin? Would go great with the Fenrir wolf I want as well (you'll get those references if you read the books in this world!).

I give this story 4 stars. It is a great reintroduction and expansion to the world I knew and enjoyed. There is no real romance in this book, but there is a lot of potential! So those who like a slow romance may find themselves enjoying this series. I recommend it to those that love a fun fantasy world.

For a limited time, the first 3 Mythos Academy series books (the series that started it all) and a prequel novella is on sale. The series is listed at $2.99 as of this writing. I'm not sure how long it will last.

Q&A with Jennifer Estep... and Giveaway!

B&T: How did you come up with the idea to combine the mythology in the Mythos Academy books?

JE: I’ve always loved mythology and all the stories of all the gods, goddesses, warriors, creatures, and more battling each other and going on these epic quests. I like reading mythology and mythology-based stories, but it seems like most of them only focus on one type of mythology. So I thought it would be fun to make the Mythos Academy books a little more open-ended and include all types of mythology. There’s a lot of Greek and Norse mythology in the books, but I also try to include bits and pieces of other mythologies too.

B&T: How did you come up with the idea of Vic?

JE: Well, since Gwen goes to a school for warriors, I thought she should have some sort of weapon. Somewhere along the way, I thought it would be interesting if the weapon could talk and could be another character in the story – one who was a little bloodthirsty (he is a sword, after all). So that was sort of the beginning of Vic, Gwen’s talking sword. Readers really seem to like his character and his snarky comments, and I’ve had a lot of fun writing him.

B&T: I just love Vic! He's my fave sword! ;D

B&T: Within the idea of a 6 word story, explain the Mythos Academy books.

JE: Myths, magic, monsters, warrior whiz kids.

B&T: Do you have any more ideas for YA books in the future?

JE: I have a couple of ideas for new urban fantasy series that I am mulling over. I’m not sure if they’ll be YA series or not, although I’d certainly like to write more YA books. Right now, I’m pretty busy writing my Elemental Assassin and Mythos Academy series, so we’ll see what happens.

B&T: I would love a new series, but I also love to have more of the Elemental Assassin and Mythos Academy books!

B&T: For fans of your work, like me, what is going to be published next?

JE: DARK FROST, the third Mythos Academy book, was published on May 29. CRIMSON FROST, the fourth book, will be out in January 2013.

Also, WIDOW’S WEB, the seventh Elemental Assassin book, will be out on Aug. 21. Folks can visit my website at www.jenniferestep.com for excerpts and more information about my books. Happy reading!

B&T: Sweet!!

Touch of Frost and First Frost by Jennifer Estep

Touch of Frost (Mythos Academy)Description:
My name is Gwen Frost, and I go to Mythos Academy — a school of myths, magic and warrior whiz kids, where even the lowliest geek knows how to chop off somebody's head with a sword and Logan Quinn, the hottest Spartan guy in school, also happens to be the deadliest.
But lately, things have been weird, even for Mythos. First, mean girl Jasmine Ashton was murdered in the Library of Antiquities. Then, someone stole the Bowl of Tears, a magical artifact that can be used to bring about the second Chaos War. You know, death, destruction and lots of other bad, bad things. Freaky stuff like this goes on all the time at Mythos, but I'm determined to find out who killed Jasmine and why—especially since I should have been the one who died. . .
If you have been around the blog for a while now, you know I am a total fan geek of The Elemental Assassin series by Jennifer Estep. So, when she announced she was going to come out with a YA series that deals with mythology, I totally squeed. Oh yes I did. Now that I have devoured this book, I can say I was right to squee. I really enjoyed this introduction to this series.

Gwen has always had psychometry and has made good use of it in a completely teenage way. She makes money off her friends finding lost items. One day, she is using the brush of a friend and find out what horrors lurked in her house because of a pedophile. Gwen's strong reaction lands her in the hospital and the pedophile in jail thanks to Gwen's mother who is a cop. This is the beginning of Gwen's foray into the realm of Mythos Academy. It was time for her to learn more about her gift and how to control it.

The academy is attended by the decedents of various groups both mythical and real but all with mythic histories. Amazons, Spartans, and Valkyries are a few of the groups that attend the academy. Gwen is the only Gypsy. They deal with typical teenage problems but their classes are quite a bit different. Gwen is having a hard time adjusting and believing in all this "mumbo jumbo".

The world created here is very interesting. I love mythology and I love the twist given in this book. I also really enjoyed Gwen's character. The mystery was easy for me to solve, but I also understand why it took Gwen much longer to see it all come together. Her journey was much more emotional than ours and so it made sense to me.

If none of what I have said has convinced you to pick up this book since I have left so much out so I do not spoil anything, may I say you must read this for no other reason than to meet Logan and Vic. Oh I LOVED Vic but will not say who he is at all. You'll just have to meet him with Gwen. He made me laugh so much! There are also a couple of homages to her other series books like Karma Girl and the Pork Pit. Loved that as well. :)

I give this fun YA book 4 1/2 stars. I really enjoyed this read and I cannot wait for the next book Kiss of Frost due in Dec, 2011
I received this book from the author and no compensation was given for my review.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
First Frost
Description:
I am Gwen Frost, and I have a Gypsy gift. It's called psychometry - that's a fancy way of saying that I see images in my head and get flashes of other people's memories off almost everything I touch, even guys.
My gift makes me kind of nosy. Okay, okay, maybe a lot nosy--to the point of obsession sometimes. I want to know everything about everyone around me. But even I don't want to know the secrets my friend Paige is hiding or the terrible loss that will send me to a new school - Mythos Academy, where the teachers aren't preparing us for the SATs, but to battle Reapers of Chaos. Now I have no friends and no idea how my gift fits in with all these warrior whiz kids. The only thing I do know is that my life is never, ever going to be the same. . .
Okay, this is actually the prequel to the above book but you know me, I don't do anything in order if I can help it. ;) Actually I just finished that book and wanted a bit more detail. This is what this book gives you... more detail as to what Gwen references in the first book as to what leads her to Mythos Academy. It is a short, teaser book so it isn't as satisfying as the first book, but it was not meant to be that way. I would get this book (only .99 at amazon and b&n) and have it when you get Touch of Frost. That way when you end this appetiser book you can dive right into the main course. Ah... satisfying!
Oh and don't forget to come back on Aug. 3 for an interview and giveaway with Jennifer Estep! Mark your calendars! ;)
Jennifer Estep Q&A and Giveaway!!
Well, if you have been following this blog, you may notice I have only done one other Q&A post. I read so many good posts like this, I often feel inadequate and have a hard time coming up with really good questions. Luckily, Jennifer Estep has great answers to my so-so questions. So, without further ado... here is my rarely presidented Q&A with Jennifer!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Thanks Jennifer for coming on the blog! First, I'd like to ask is what inspired you to write this book?

JE: I’ve always loved mythology, and all the stories of the gods, goddesses, monsters, heroes, and more battling each other and going on these epic quests. One day, I thought it would be cool to write my own mythology-based story with my own characters, magic, and world building. That was the beginning of Touch of Frost and the rest of the books in the Mythos Academy series.

What makes the world in this book different from your other paranormal books?

JE: The biggest difference is that it’s mythology-based. I’m taking a lot of Greek and Norse gods, goddesses, monsters, and myths, and putting my own spin on them. I think folks will recognize a lot of the gods that I’m using, like Loki, the Norse trickster god, but I hope they enjoy how I use the myths to create my own world and story.

Also, Touch of Frost is a young adult book, so the overall tone of it and the rest of the books in the Mythos Academy series isn’t quite as dark and gritty as that in my Elemental Assassin adult urban fantasy books. But I think folks who like my adult books will find a lot to like in the Mythos Academy series as well, including a strong, sassy heroine, magic, lots of fight scenes, and a little romance.

Oh, I love books on mythology! If the mythologies were real, what God/Goddess do you feel you are descended from? What powers do you have?

JE: Hmm. That’s a tough one. I would have to say Skadi, the Norse goddess of winter, just because I have always seem to have cold hands, no matter how hot the temperature is. LOL.

You know what they say... cold hands, warm heart. ;)

So, who would you like to be descended from? What powers would you love to have?

JE: I think it would be cool to be descended from Nike, the Greek goddess of victory, and to have the power to never be defeated at anything. It would also be cool to be descended from someone like Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom, and know the answer to everything, or Hephaestus, the Greek god of fire (and a whole bunch of other things), and be able to craft anything I wanted, whether it was weapons, sculptures, or jewelry. That’s one of the things that I love about mythology – that there are all of these gods and goddesses from all these different cultures that have these amazing powers.

Oh I agree... what great choices!

I love snark. Where does the snark come from when writing Gwen?

JE: I think it just comes from Gwen’s character. Gwen doesn’t think that she’s a real warrior whiz kid, not like the other Mythos Academy students are, and she doesn’t feel like she fits in at all at the academy. So the snark is something that helps her cope, sort of a defense mechanism to keep up this tough façade on the outside when she really doesn’t feel strong at all deep down inside.

Are you snarky in real life? :)

JE: Snarky, sassy, and sarcastic. Not necessarily in that order. I also love to make people laugh, so a lot of the snark, sass, and sarcasm is directed at myself in a self-deprecating sort of way. LOL.

Oh , I have no idea what that is like... *cough* lol

Using the idea for a 6 word story, tell us something about Touch of Frost.

JE: Myths, monsters, magic, and mean girls.

Ooooh good answer!

Now, I know you are a big football fan. Is it possible to cheer for you to cheer for the best team? Of course, I am talking the Denver Broncos. ;D

JE: I love football, and I thought it was really cool when John Elway finally won his two Super Bowls with the Broncos. Generally, I root for the AFC teams over the NFC teams so the Broncos are okay with me. ;-)

Ah.. memories. lol *sigh* So nice when someone remembers that! *Holds up game-time beer* Cheers to a great football fan! :)

Midnight Frost Excerpt and Giveaway!

Oh guess what is being published today? Midnight Frost! So, to celebrate Jennifer Estep has given me a excerpt to whet your appetite and a giveaway (US only).

MIDNIGHT FROST EXCERPT:

     The room was dark, so I hit the switch on the wall. Lights blazed on, revealing the same furniture that all of the kids had. A bed, a desk, some bookcases, a flat-screen TV mounted on one of the walls. The only thing that was different about the room was all the trophies he’d won. Dozens of little gold men holding swords, spears, and other weapons peeped out at me from the desk, the bookcases, and a shelf above the bed. There was even a life-sized trophy stuffed in the corner, a staff clutched in his hands like the man was about to step forward and bash me over the head with it. I shivered and looked away. Somehow, the fact that none of the trophies actually had distinct faces made them even creepier.

     A loud sigh sounded, and I realized that Vic was awake. The sword had gone to sleep, as was his habit when he was in his scabbard. I pulled the sword free of the leather and held him up so that we were face-to-face. The sword glanced around the room.

     Vic sighed again. “Really? You’re going to come in here and mope again?”

     “I’m not moping,” I said in a defensive voice.

     “Really?” Vic asked again, his voice made even more sarcastic by his biting English accent. “Because I think that sitting on the Spartan’s bed and staring at his things definitely qualifies as moping. Brooding, even. Especially when you’ve done it a dozen times since he left.”

     I looked out over Logan’s room. Maybe Vic was right. Maybe I was moping over the Spartan and the fact that he’d left Mythos—that he’d left me.

Here we go again …

Just when it seems life at Mythos Academy can’t get any more dangerous, the Reapers of Chaos manage to prove me wrong. It was just a typical night at the Library of Antiquities — until a Reaper tried to poison me. The good news is I’m still alive and kicking. The bad news is the Reaper poisoned someone else instead.

As Nike’s Champion, everyone expects me to lead the charge against the Reapers, even though I’m still hurting over what happened with Spartan warrior Logan Quinn. I’ve got to get my hands on the antidote fast — otherwise, an innocent person will die. But the only known cure is hidden in some creepy ruins — and the Reapers are sure to be waiting for me there …

Oh another installment in the Mythos Academy series! Ah... but *puts thinking cap on* *worries that it doesn't fit* *shrugs* how do I talk about the book so I don't spoil anything for those that still need to read book 1? I know! Insist that everyone read all 4 books so I can talk freely. That works, right? LOL

In this book I admit I was worried that Gwen might end up whining a bit more than would be warranted despite the fact that she had several good reasons in the past to whine. However, Gwen never disappoints me in this regard and always knows how to get her head on straight when it is needed. Again I am happy we have an intelligent and kick arse heroine to lead us through the Chaos Wars.

The only tiny spoilerish (only if you haven't read the other books) tid bit I will let loose is about Logan. I was worried I was going to go back to the love/hate/love/hate relationship we had in the past. While I won't say if we achieved backward book relationship status or not, but I will say that this part is satisfying. I was worried we might have to go through another book to find out if Gwen would get her answer about Logan. We get one here.

I give this book 4 1/2 stars. My biggest complaint is that I don't have the next book in my hot little hands right now. Well, that and I don't have a fenrir wolf next to me (my pups oddly disagree...). Yes, I LOVE the mythical creatures in this book. I hope for more insights into these creatures as the books continue.

Dark Frost (Mythos Academy #3) by Jennifer Estep

I’ve seen so many freaky things since I started attending Mythos Academy last fall. I know I’m supposed to be a fearless warrior, but most of the time, I feel like I’m just waiting for the next Bad, Bad Thing to happen. Like someone trying to kill me—again.
Everyone at Mythos Academy knows me as Gwen Frost, the Gypsy girl who uses her psychometry magic to find lost objects—and who just may be dating Logan Quinn, the hottest guy in school. But I’m also the girl the Reapers of Chaos want dead in the worst way. The Reapers are the baddest of the bad, the people who murdered my mom. So why do they have it in for me?
It turns out my mom hid a powerful artifact called the Helheim Dagger before she died. Now, the Reapers will do anything to get it back. They think I know where the dagger is hidden, but this is one thing I can’t use my magic to find. All I do know is that the Reapers are coming for me—and I’m in for the fight of my life.
I usually try to post the Mythos Academy series books on the day of  publication, but I just couldn't wait to dive into this book. I'm so glad I did. I devoured it quickly. For those that haven't started these books, I will try to be as non-spoilery (it's a word... I just made it up!) as possible.

Okay, let me start off by saying that Logan, Gwen's love interest, and I have had a difficult relationship. There were times I just loved him and times I wanted to seriously kick that Spartan's arse. Oh and in this book our relationship seemed to be going the same way. Usually it's only one swoon and one arse kicking... in this one, it was several. However, I will say that Logan did win me over in the end and I swooned a lot. :) Too bad he's not at least 21... well, outside my mind. ;D

Gwen is still my fave gypsy. Her adventure captured me and I have to say this was my fave so far. I really loved the way her character grew in this book. In fact, with what she had to handle I thought she did it with more grace than most adults. I really enjoyed that.

Now to the part where I curse Ms. Estep for tearing out my heart and stomping on it. Let me just say a character we briefly got to know in the last book we get a little more of in this one. Then my heart gets ripped out and I had to have a kleenex or two on hand. Oh I do hate to cry, but I also wanted more. *shakes fist* Darn you Jennifer Estep! I wanted more! ;)

I give this book 5 stars. I really enjoyed this episode in Gwen's adventure. No cliffie, but you will be salivating for the next morsel. I know I am! *wipes chin* Also, can I have a fenrir wolf? *gets glares from dogs in the room* What? ;D

This book is to be published on May 29th! Preorder your copy at Amazon, B&N or the Book Depository. Do eet! ;) Also, come back on June 1st for a Q&A with Jennifer Estep and a giveaway of the book!
I received this ARC from the author and no compensation for my review was given.

Crimson Frost (Mythos Academy #4) by Jennifer Estep

"For a moment, a face flashed before my eyes—the most hideous face I’d ever seen. No matter how hard I tried to forget what had happened, I saw him everywhere I went. It was Loki—the evil god that I’d helped set free against my will."
I should have known that my first official date with Logan Quinn was destined to end in disaster. If we’d gotten into a swordfight, or been ambushed by Reapers, I’d have been more prepared. But getting arrested mid-sip at the local coffee hangout? I didn’t see that one coming.
I’ve been accused of purposely helping the Reapers free Loki from his prison—and the person leading the charge against me is Linus Quinn, Logan’s dad. The worst part is that pretty much everyone at Mythos Academy thinks I’m guilty. If I’m going to get out of this mess alive, I’ll have to do it myself…
 OMG! Those following this series will love this book. The rest of you? Go get book 1, Touch of Frost! Seriously... GO! This series is amazing and this is such a great addition. My goal right now? Not to spoil a thing for those reading the series and those not yet picked it up.

This book is filled with a bit more political intrigue. We learn more about Loki's reapers and yet so much still remains a mystery. The adventure and action blend well with the intrigue and I have to say that I'm really impressed with Gwen in this book. Not only is she brave, but she is intelligent as well. I love that in female YA characters!

There are aspects we have also been teased throughout the series and still are teased more. I know I will get those answers but will have to wait a bit longer to find out what they mean. I won't say what they are for fear of spoiling it for those just starting, but I will say that although I want those answers, I also don't mind waiting. Why? Because that means I'll get more Mythos Academy adventure!

What else? The action was fierce and Gwen's circle of friends widens. Ah the secondary characters rocked. And of course Vic still tried to steal the show. I love that sword! My biggest complaint? The next book is slated for Aug 2013. :( Well, you know good thing comes to those that wait.
I received this ARC from the author and no compensation for my review was given.

...and speaking of waiting...

Author Blog Post: Crimson Frost Excerpt and Giveaway!

Crimson Frost
by Jennifer Estep
For a moment, a face flashed before my eyes—the most hideous face I’d ever seen. No matter how hard I tried to forget what had happened, I saw him everywhere I went. It was Loki—the evil god that I’d helped set free against my will.
I should have known that my first official date with Logan Quinn was destined to end in disaster. If we’d gotten into a swordfight, or been ambushed by Reapers, I’d have been more prepared. But getting arrested mid-sip at the local coffee hangout? I didn’t see that one coming.

The worst part is that pretty much everyone at Mythos Academy thinks I’m guilty. If I’m going to get out of this mess alive, I’ll have to do it myself…

CRIMSON FROST EXCERPT:

     We set off down the sidewalk. Kaldi Coffee was located on the main street that ran through Cypress Mountain, and more and more people stuck their heads outside to stare at us as we passed. The ritzy suburb and all its high-end shops were here to see to the needs of everyone at Mythos Academy, so all the business owners and workers knew the score when it came to the mythological world. Most of them were former Mythos students themselves, who’d decided to settle down near the academy. The only folks who didn’t realize what was going on were the few tourists who’d braved the cold to come shopping. They glanced out the windows at me for a moment before going back to their browsing.

     “You’re making a big mistake,” Logan repeated. “Gwen didn’t free Loki—she tried to stop it from happening. We all did.”

     “All? By that, I assume you mean you and your new group of friends,” Linus said. “Something else we need to discuss. I thought you were finally calming down and learning how to be a real fighter, but it seems like you’ve gotten yourself into even more trouble than usual. Starting with this girl.”

     I didn’t care if he was Logan’s dad and apparently some bigshot within the Pantheon. The way he kept saying this girl like I was the worst of the worst grated on my last nerve.

     “I have a name,” I snapped. “It’s Gwen, Gwen Frost. Obviously, you know it since you announced it to the whole coffee shop.”

     Linus looked over his shoulder at me. “Do not test me, girl.”

     My hands clenched into fists, but there was nothing I could do about his cold words—or the fact that he seemed to hate me on sight. Not exactly how I’d pictured things going if I ever met Logan’s dad. Still, I drew in a breath, trying to push past my anger and fear and get to the bottom of things.

     “Well, can you at least tell me where we’re going?” I asked.

     “You’ll see,” Linus said in a cryptic tone. “It’s not far.”

This is such a great series with great characters (like Charlie who is a great mom which you rarely see anymore) and even a lovable hellhound. The world building is superb and you do have a swoony character in Hank. This series really is SO good and I think that everyone should read it.
Pick up the books in the series:

Spartan Frost (Mythos Academy #4.5) by Jennifer Estep

Series: Mythos Academy #4.5
60p.
Publisher: Kensington-Teen
Available Now
Source: Author and netgalley for review
I’m Logan Quinn, the deadliest Spartan warrior at Mythos Academy. At least I was — until the day I almost killed Gwen Frost.
Professor Metis and Nickamedes say that I’m fine, that Loki and the Reapers don’t have a hold on me anymore, but I can’t risk it. I can’t risk hurting Gwen again. So I’m leaving Mythos and going somewhere far, far away.
I know Gwen wonders what’s happening to me, whether I’m safe. I can’t tell her, but this is my story…
My thoughts:
Although I was disappointed the cover wasn't a vision of Logan, this is his POV of what had recently transpired in the last book, Crimson Frost. I admit I have a love/hate/love relationship with this spartan, but it's been all love lately, so I was excited to get to this novella.

What I enjoyed in this short book was how you really get a glimpse of his feelings for Gwen and the havoc the last adventure played on his confidence. Not many questions are answered for the series, but this isn't a book for that... we just get a glimpse of Logan and his life.

However...

What I needed more of is... LOGAN! I would love to know more from his POV. Granted that would take a full novel and not a novella, so I'm hoping for more POVs. I will take more novellas. I would love to see something more romantic from him as well.

My only complaint is that parts of the book were a bit repetitive. Not so much that it pulled me out of the book, but enough to notice. My other complaint was that it was too short and ended abruptly. However, this is to be expected since it is a filler novella and not a novel.

I give the novella 3 1/2 stars. I can't wait to dive into Midnight Frost and I'm looking forward to more novellas (crosses fingers) from Logan's POV. :)

Tell Me Something Tuesday: Series books

Tell Me Something Tuesday, a meme started by CambriaHebert, but now hosted on Rainy Day Ramblings. It is a chance to get to know your fellow bloggers by sharing fun stuff, discussions and more. Grab the question and post your answer on your blog and link up at Rainy Day Ramblings! Have fun!
This weeks question:
To continue or not to continue.....let's talk about series! What are some of your favorite series that you continue to read? What would cause you to not continue a series?

First, I'll talk about what it takes for me to not continue a series. Usually something I'm totally opposed. I've read a book where rape was seen as "okay" and in fact there was no reason for the rape. I just couldn't continue with a story like that and found out that the other books in the series had the same theme. Nope, once was enough for me.

My other reason for not continuing with a series is usually time. I'll get to it, but it will take time to get back into the series. Usually I hate when that happens. :)

However there are SO many I'm addicted to and to list them all would be impossible. Okay, it would be possible, but this would be one long arse post! LOL

I'll start with those I just reviewed or are coming out soon...

Yesterday I reviewed Other Oceans by Andrea Jones (adult series). Loved it and the first book in the series is:

Hook and Jill
Hook and Jill Saga #1
by Andrea Jones
An ageless fable grows up...
Wendy Darling learns. What appears to be good may prove otherwise, and what seems to be evil…is irresistible.
In this startling new vision of a cultural classic, Wendy intends to live happily ever after with Peter Pan. But Time, like this tale, behaves in a most unsettling way.
As Wendy mothers the Lost Boys in Neverland, they thrive on adventure. She struggles to keep her boys safe from the Island’s many hazards, but she finds a more subtle threat encroaching from an unexpected quarter.…The children are growing up, and only Peter knows the punishment.
Yet in the inky edges of the Island, the tales Wendy tells to the Lost Boys come true. Captain Hook is real, and even the Wonderful Boy can’t defend his Wendy against this menace. Hook is a master manipulator, devising vengeance for his maiming. Insidious and seductive, Hook has his reasons for tempting Wendy to grow up.
Revenge is only the first.
Deepening the characters so artfully sketched by J.M. Barrie, Hook & Jill reveals the dark side of innocence at which Barrie hinted in the figure of Peter Pan. It brings alive a daring Wendy who asks questions and seeks truth; it delves into the man, Hook, the iconic villain. Striding from fairy-tale and thrusting into reality, Captain Hook becomes a frightening force indeed.
The Mythos Academy is a YA series I enjoy. The novella Spartan Frost just came out and the next novel is set to come out at the end of July:

Midnight Frost
Mythos Academy #5
by Jennifer Estep

But the only known cure is hidden in some creepy ruins — and the Reapers are sure to be waiting for me there…
...and speaking of Jennifer Estep, I am also addicted to her Elemental Assassin series as well.

I would also like to issue a total love of UF series. Some (and I mean SOME) of these are:

...and on and on and on...
these are just a few of my faves and I apologize to those that I haven't mentioned. My brain can only handle so much goodness at a time. :)

So, are there reasons you quit a series and what series would you like to mention?

Interview with Vic and Kiss of Frost Giveaway!!

Ah, yes! I'm so excited to do a interview with Vic my fave character in the Mythos academy books! So excited, I had to make a button just for him! For those not in the know, Vic is a sword gifted to Gwen by the Goddess Nike. I did try to taylor my questions so that no one will have their book spoiled. So, before I squee again, here is my interview with Vic!!

Me: Welcome VIC! I will do my best to calm myself. So, Vic... could you give some background on yourself?

Vic: I’m Vic. I’m a sword whose hilt is shaped like half of a man’s face. I have an English accent. I talk a lot. Actually, some people say that I talk too much. Bloody rubbish, I say. *harrumphs*

Me: Who was Nike to you?

Vic: Nike is the Greek goddess of victory. Really, I can’t say too much about her, just that the goddess and I go back a long, long time and that I have faithfully served her and her Champions for many years.

Me: What would you love to be doing right now?

Vic: Why, fighting Reapers of Chaos, of course. I’m a sword. I live for battle!

But when I’m not out helping Gwen fight Reapers, I like to watch action-movie marathons in my free time.

Me: Would you consider yourself Gwen's sidekick or are you the true hero?

Vic: Well, of course Gwen thinks of herself as the hero, but we all know that a warrior is only as good as the weapon she uses in battle. I think I do my fair share of the fighting.

Me: Best thing in working with Gwen?

Vic: Gwen is a quick learner, and she’s made a lot of progress as a warrior already. I’m looking forward to helping her improve her fighting skills even more.

Me: Worst?

Vic: Gwen always claims that I’m moody, but she’s the one who’s a bloody teenager. You have no idea how boring it is for me to have to sit there and listen to her and her Valkyrie friend, Daphne Cruz, go on and on and on about things like clothes and boys and homework. I should not be subjected to such things. *harrumphs again*

Me: What do you think about Logan?

Vic: Logan Quinn. Now there’s a warrior for you. All Spartans have that killer instinct, but Logan is definitely something special. The boy has a lot of potential, which I hope he lives up to.

Me: What would you like people to know about you?

Vic: Just that you don’t want to get on my bad side … because I’ll cut you to ribbons. *laughs at his own bad joke*
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
*laughs* Oh Vic! I don't think you talk enough! Oh and I would NEVER think of getting on your bad side. Keep on snarkin' Vic!!
Btw, Vic also brought a surprise for everyone!
Vic has convinced Ms. Estep to giveaway one signed copy of the book, Kiss of Frost! US only. Just fill out the rafflecopter form below to enter! Oh and Vic has allowed Ms. Estep to comment today to any questions you may have!
Description:
Logan Quinn was trying to kill me. My Spartan classmate relentlessly pursued me, swinging his sword at me over and over again, the shining silver blade inching closer to my throat every time. A smile tugged up his lips, and his ice-blue eyes practically glowed with the thrill of battle...
I’m Gwen Frost, a second-year warrior-in-training at Mythos Academy, and I have no idea how I’m going to survive the rest of the semester. One day, I’m getting schooled in swordplay by the guy who broke my heart—the drop-dead gorgeous Logan who slays me every time. Then, an invisible archer in the Library of Antiquities decides to use me for target practice. And now, I find out that someone at the academy is really a Reaper bad guy who wants me dead. I’m afraid if I don’t learn how to live by the sword—with Logan’s help—I just might die by the sword...
Guest Post: Jennifer Estep and Venom Giveaway!
Greetings and salutations! First of all, I want to say thanks to Melissa for having me on the blog today. Thanks, Melissa!
Some of you might know me as the author of the Elemental Assassin urban fantasy series. The books focus on Gin Blanco, an assassin codenamed the Spider who can control the elements of Ice and Stone. When she’s not busy killing people and righting wrongs, Gin runs a barbecue restaurant called the Pork Pit in the fictional southern metropolis of Ashland. The city is also home to giants, dwarves, vampires, and elementals – Air, Fire, Ice, and Stone.
The first two books in the series are Spider’s Bite and Web of Lies. Venom, the third book, came out on Sept. 28. Tangled Threads, the fourth book, will be published in May 2011, while the fifth book (untitled) will be released in October 2011.
I’ve also sold a young adult urban fantasy series called Mythos Academy. The first book is called Touch of Frost and will be out in August 2011. The books focus on Gwen Frost, a Gypsy girl who has the gift of psychometry, or the ability to know an object’s history just by touching it. After a serious freak-out with her magic, Gwen finds herself shipped off to Mythos Academy, a school for the descendents of ancient warriors like Spartans, Valkyries, and more.
So Melissa suggested that I do a post today about the questions that I get asked as an author. I get tons of questions and comments through e-mail, Facebook, and Twitter, everything from requests for bookmarks to tips on writing to when my next book is coming out.
But today, I thought I would focus on some of the most interesting and most unusual things that people have asked me. Here goes:
1) Are your Elemental Assassin books like the movie Fried Green Tomatoes?
Uh, no. Gin does not barbecue and serve up the people that she kills at her restaurant. That would just be icky. You would not believe how many people have asked me this one, and it’s something that I never even thought about while I was writing the books.
2) You look like such a nice girl. How can you write all that sex and violence?
Apparently, I hide my true dark, twisted, evil nature quite well. ;-)
Seriously, though, I like reading books with a little bit of everything in them, including sex and violence, and those are the kind of books that I like writing. Besides, it’s just fun to write about a character who’s as strong and sassy as Gin in. She lives in a violent world, and she gives as good as she gets. Enough said.
3) Why aren’t vampires featured more prominently in your books?
Because there are lots of vampire books out there already, and I wanted to do something a little different. So vampires are a part of my world, but the focus isn’t on them any more than it’s on the dwarves or giants. The focus is on Gin and her elemental magic. But I am thinking about having Gin take on a really nasty vampire bad guy at some point in the series. We’ll see what happens.
4) Are you the woman on the Elemental Assassin book covers?
No, that is not me on the covers. I wish my body was that good! But I get asked this question a lot when I sign books at my local comic book store. I think some of the guys there are hoping that I’ll pull a superhero switcheroo and suddenly go from geeky to hot in five seconds. Sorry, fellas, it’s not going to happen. What you see is what you get. LOL.
5) Are you as tough as Gin is?
Unfortunately, no. I wish that I could kick butt like she does or was just as mentally tough. The truth is that I’m kind of wimpy. I don’t like arguments or confrontations, and I tend to keep my feelings to myself. Heck, I don’t even like killing bugs because I hate the way they crunch under my shoes.
I’m pretty laid back. Live and let live and all that. Be nice to me, and I’ll be nice to you. Treat me like dirt, and I will wish that I could make your head explode with my fiery gaze alone.
I can be ruthless about certain things, though. If you are between me and the last cookie on the plate, then you are in serious trouble. ;-)
6) Can you cook like Gin does?
You bet your bottom dollar I can! Well, okay, maybe I can’t cook quite as good as Gin does. After all, everything she makes turns out perfect every single time. My dishes don’t always do that. But I think I’m a pretty decent cook. Let’s face it – it’s not that hard to follow a recipe. LOL.
I think the key to being a good cook is to just keep things simple. It’s a lot easier to dress up a cake mix and have it turn out nicely than it is to make something complicated from scratch. I tend to stick to what I call “mix and stir” recipes. A few ingredients you mix together, then bake or refrigerate or whatever. I’m pressed for time like everybody else, so I like simple recipes with common ingredients.
Besides, I think the best food is often the simplest. To me, you just can’t beat things like fried chicken, mashed potatoes, buttermilk biscuits, or chocolate cake. Mmm … I’m getting hungry just typing this …
7) Are the recipes in the books real? They sound so good!
Some of the recipes are real, while others (like Fletcher Lane’s secret barbecue sauce) exist only in my imagination. Most of the recipes are tried and true favorites that I’ve collected over the years from friends, family, magazines, etc. You can find some of them on my website: http://www.jenniferestep.com/books-series/elemental-assassin-series/. Scroll down until you see “Gin’s Recipe Box.” Every once in a while, I swap out the recipes or add new ones.
8) Are you really from the South?
Yep, I’m a Southern girl born and bred. In fact, my hillbilly drawl would probably make you cringe if you heard it. I’ve lived my whole life in the mountains in the South, and I don’t see that ever changing.
9) Do you like barbecue? What are some of your favorite foods?
I love a good barbecue sandwich, although baked beans are my favorite barbecue-related thing. I’ve got a big sweet tooth so I love cookies and cake and ice cream, but I also really like hearty foods, like mac and cheese, French fries, and pasta. Cheese is my real weakness though. I love cheese.
10) Do you have a plan for the Elemental Assassin series? When will Gin get revenge on the person who murdered her family?
I do have a plan for the series. I’m under contract for five books right now, which will let me finish out the big story arc with Gin and her nemesis. Most of the other big questions will be answered as well, like who Gin ends up with.
I know that I hate it when a series goes on forever and nothing seems to happen or change, so I want to give readers a complete story with these five books. Of course, I’d like to write more books in the series beyond these five, but that will depend on sales, like everything else does.
So there you have it. Some of the many questions that I’ve been asked as an author over the years.
What about you guys? Got anything you’d like to ask me? Share in the comments.
