When she’s sent to a crime scene and finds her second dead woman in as many weeks, half-banshee detective Kiera “Mac” McLoughlin is convinced a serial killer is on the loose. Incubi are extinct, her boss insists. But what else can kill a woman in the throes of pleasure? When her partner is murdered after using witchcraft to locate the killer and Mac is thrown off the case, her frustration turns to desperation.
Certain the killer is an incubus, Mac works behind her department’s back to chase down slim, sometimes perilous leads. While the killer eludes her, she does discover handsome Aidan Byrne, an investigative counterpart from the enigmatic Otherworlder Enforcement Agency. Mac typically runs her investigations fast and hard, but with Aidan at her side, she’s running this one “hot” as well. But Aidan knows more than he’s letting on—something that could shatter their blazing romance and add Mac to the killer’s growing body count…
Incubi? Okay, that had me curious. I mean there are a lot of succubus type of stories, but not often do we get an incubus. So, yes, I had to try this series. Plus, I admit I do like the paranormal cop angle. Makes it more like a UF/PNR book. I usually enjoy those.
Mac is someone I liked. A bit snarky at times and didn't take crap from anyone. She's had to deal with prejudice of being an "other" especially being a half-banshee. She runs into a baffling case and one that seems to lead to nowhere. She is joined by someone who claims to be from an elite group of otherworld investigators. Hopefully with his help, she'll solve the case. Or will he just get in the way?
I have to admit although I did enjoy this paranormal, I did find it predictable. I knew things way before Mac so no big twists or turns happened for me. The mystery tries to steal the limelight, but it seems as though the relationship (or really the bedding) of Mac and Aidan was more spotlighted. Not that it was necessarily a bad thing, but I would have liked the mystery to take center stage and make the relationship enhance the tension.
I give this book 3 stars and I do recommend it to anyone who likes a short fun adult novella. I am curious as to how Mac and Aidan will hopefully expand their relationship in both a professional and personal way. I think there is potential there.
I received this ARC from the publisher and no compensation for my review was given.

When I think about it then yes I only see succbi around..wait, I have read about one incubi. But just one
ReplyDeleteYes, they are a rare and elusive creature! :)
DeleteNice review, I just won this book last week :) so now I know a bit more what to expect of it.
ReplyDeleteI really hope you enjoy it! I think you'll like Mac.
DeleteIncubi/Incubus? Now I'm intrigued.
ReplyDeleteAh hah! Now I know how to get your attention. ;)
DeleteOh yes, incubis. Have you read the Demonica series by Larissa Ione. *Fans self* Enough said. ;)
ReplyDeleteI'm the opposite, I've never read anything with banshees before. Sounds interesting.
That series is on my WANT list. :)
DeleteOh and I haven't either. Although Hallmark did make me laugh with them (youtube hallmark and banshee... LOL)
I can't say I've read many books feature incubi or succubi, so I like the premise of this one already! Though now that Rummanah mentioned it, I have read the Demonica books. Whuh. *dies of hotness* Too bad on the predictability of this one though, I always like when things appear predictable and then I'm completely surprised by how wrong my whole line of thinking was at the end:) Awesome review Melissa!
ReplyDeleteOh I REALLY need to get that series!! YUM!
DeleteIt still made a nice easy read. :) You'd like Aidan!
I haven't read many banshee books. I never read the SoulScreamers. I kind of like the lore behind them. I haven't read the Demonica series. Maybe I'll have to now. I learn so much when I drop by here!
ReplyDeleteHeather
Both series are on my WANT list. Maybe I should call it whine list? I wanna them *whine* LOL
DeleteHmm, sounds like something I read. I don't read so many books on Banshees. Great review!
ReplyDeleteIt's an easy one. You'd probably get it done in an hour. You rock the books, Savy!
DeleteI was quite curious about this one but finally too many book for adding this one. I'm glad you enjoyed it, it sounds like a nice read. I would love to learn more about the series.
ReplyDeleteAh you have better restraint than I. I really need to learn to say no, but I still enjoy what comes my way. :D
DeleteIf only you know... I'm also terrible but I agreed for too many books lol. But at the end I still need to say no because I say yes to a lot before.
DeleteSounds like a romance masquerading as a mystery. Too bad it was a bit too predictable.
ReplyDeleteOh I've seen this one, and it sounds good. :) Thank you for the review.
ReplyDeleteLol! Mel? Say no? When there's potential to add to your harem? NEVER!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm more a fan of mystery than romance but I like the idea of Banshee cop...
ReplyDeleteIncubi, eh? I don't think I've ever read a story about Incubi, but I have seen a few as side characters in very small rows. As much as it sounds interesting to take on Incubi, I don't think I could deal with predictable right now. I need a whole lot of fresh.
