Oops! Couldn't finish...

Well, it happened. I just didn't finish a book. I was reading Uglies (Uglies Trilogy, Book 1) by Scott Westerfeld. I had heard so many good things about this book. As I was reading I could see that this is a wonderful book for YA. It was a cleaver story on how we place emphasis on beauty versus who we truly could and can become. I would whole heartedly recommend this book to any young girl to read. I think, for me personally, it was just too much YA at heart. I couldn't connect to the main character Tally and so I had a hard time getting into the book.

Has anyone else had a problem with a highly acclaimed book just not interesting you? One that you could find value and would recommend to someone who you feel would enjoy it, but just couldn't get into it?

Well for me, I guess it is back to urban fantasy.

  1. I have that problem with most highly acclaimed books. My tastes seem to veer from mainstream more often than not. I just read The Road by Cormac McCarthy and it was like that for me. People love it, but it just was not working for me.

Uglies seems like this for a lot of people. Either you love it or you really don't want to finish it. I haven't read many reviews of it just being an average read for someone.

  2. I hadn't heard anything but praise for Uglies, so that makes me feel a bit better. :)

  3. I'm finding that a lot of highly acclaimed books just aren't doing it for me. I think part of the problem is that there are too many books being published too quickly... at the expense of quality.

So you like urban fantasy, eh? Are you a Charles de Lint fan?

  4. You know, I haven't read his yet. I have a few screaming at me to read but are down a bit on my TBR. Darn real life that gets in the way! lol

  5. I had the same problem with the Uglies series. The summary sounded super amazing and everyone said it was the best book ever. So I gave it a try, and could hardly read it.
