Griffin Shaw and his wife were both murdered fifty years ago. Now a minor angel, Grif's been granted permission to solve the mystery of his own death... if he helps the Pure angels guide those souls who might otherwise be Lost.
Souls like Jeap Yang, a drug addict in his final moments of life. Grif knows that death is coming, but he cannot intervene. However, Grif's mortal lover, reporter Katherine "Kit" Craig, isn't constrained by angelic protocol. If she can stop a death, she will.
But as Kit is about to find out, there are things more traumatic and evil than murder. A strange new drug is literally eating tweakers' flesh from their bones, and Kit's crusade to get it off the streets is set to propel her and Grif into a battle with a vicious drug cartel. They'll have to scramble to stay alive, stay together, and choose their own fate... before it's chosen for them.
My thoughts:
The second in the series (yes, I have read them in order so far, but then it's not hard... it's only #2! LOL) and we find ourselves back with Grif and Kit. In this story Kit's obsession with rockabilly is toned down a bit and I have to admit, I found it more charming that way. Kit is also extremely naïve in this book and sometimes it seemed to get in her way. I felt there was purpose in this to show how pure of heart she was, but it also seemed to not go with her personality otherwise. She was a smart reporter... being naïve just didn't seem to compliment her reporter personna. Grif is still obsessed with his and his wife's murder which gets in the way of the relationship between the two. Throughout all of this they find themselves sleuthing out a new drug problem that has hit the streets which strips the flesh from the body as well as highly addictive. They try to figure out who is behind the drug while no one on their suspect list is who they claim to be.

I give this book 3 stars. I enjoyed the plot as a whole, but I did find that Kit got in her own way in this book. I didn't like the ending (no cliffie) but I wasn't supposed to like it and now can't wait to find out what happens next. Luckily the next book will be published very soon. I recommend this series for those that like a PI mystery with their PNR.

  1. Somehow I never really managed to get into this series. I must have started and dropped the first book at least four or five times, but I never really got attached to the characters. I'm glad you're enjoying it. I like Vicki a lot, I should try again.

    1. I think this one was better than the first, but you may not like Kit in this one. I liked her, but I just thought she was too naïve.

  2. Kit really did get in her way a lot and being naïve isn't a good thing for a reporter. Not that reporters need to be cynical but they do have to have a good understanding of the world around them.

  3. Loving the cover but alas this book just doesn't appeal to me despite your review.

  4. I would be so all over this series, were it not the angel thing. But I'm glad it was a good read.
I've been meaning to try out her Signs of the Zodiac series, read any of those?

    1. :) I know what you mean, but you might like these angels. Grif is more down-to-earth.

  5. I think her being naive would be tricky for me Melissa, especially since, like you said, she's a reporter and those two things don't seem to jive (at least to me). It sounds like a solid installment overall though, and hopefully Kit loses some of that naivete moving forward!

    1. I think she will. I think there was a purpose to it in the book, it just didn't work well here though.

  6. I only liked the first book okay and decided not to continue the series and it kind of sounds like I made the right decision. I want books that WOW me and aren't just 'okay' or 'pretty good'.

    1. I understand. I felt the same way about the first one, but I'm hoping it does get better. I've had series like that really take off.

  7. I liked this one too, though I'm blanking on a lot of the details since it's been awhile now. haha That's one thing I hate about series!

  8. I was eager to read this series, but the reviews are pretty mediocre, no one seems blown away by it so I haven't picked it up.

  9. Eh, I am just not sure about this one

  10. You are reading them in order? *blinks* While Kit didn't please you, I am glad you are excited for book three. I am slowly getting better and have started visiting blogs that visit me, but I nap a lot and nights are very long and very hard with breathing. Hopefully this will all be a distant memory soon.

  13. I haven't heard of this series before, though I'm not sure I'd be able to get into this. Still, I'm curious to see what you think as the series progresses - installments that improve upon each other are always incredibly positive signs.

  14. I like the new background!

This reminds me of Boggy and Bacall for some reason though he wasn't dead. Just the genre. So they left u hanging on the ending? Hmm, I would probably wait until the next book is out, you know how I hate waiting for the resolutions.

  16. Eek I've been meaning to read the first book. I think I have it already. Well, hopefully the next book is much better for you.

  17. I liked this one slightly more than you, but make sure you check-out the last book. It's totally worth it just for the ending!

  20. Awww, I'm saddened you didn't like the ending, but then again, such endings are like that as they compel you to read the next book, don't it? :) I haven't heard of this series before though, so I may check it out one of these days.

  21. I've been holding off on this series (even though I have both of the available books--they were on sale for like a dollar . . . what was I supposed to do? Ignore them? Pfft.), b/c I wasn't a HUGE fan of Pettersson's Zodiac series. And it looks like I'm going to holding off a bit longer. Especially since it looks like you'll be reading the next one, and I can count on you for more info ;) And hooray! for reading books in order, LOL.

  22. Yay you're reading these in order! :-) This sounds like a good read, but probably something I'd wait to see how the rest of the series develops before investing time. I have SO many series I'm behind on these days. Awesome review!

  24. I remember enjoying the first book so I'll be picking this one up too at some point, Melissa. Thanks for a great review!
