Jason Walker has often wished his life could be a bit less predictable--until a routine day at the zoo ends with Jason suddenly transporting from the hippo tank to a place unlike anything he's ever seen. In the past, the people of Lyrian welcomed visitors from the Beyond, but attitudes have changed since the wizard emperor Maldor rose to power. The brave resistors who opposed the emperor have been bought off or broken, leaving a realm where fear and suspicion prevail. In his search for a way home, Jason meets Rachel, who was also mysteriously drawn to Lyrian from our world. With the help of a few scattered rebels, Jason and Rachel become entangled in a quest to piece together the word of power that can destroy the emperor, and learn that their best hope to find a way home will be to save this world without heroes. This is a fun MG/YA book for both boys and girls. As the character is only 13 years of age, I don't think it would appeal to the older YA crowd. This is a great introduction to fantasy for the younger set and even though it is 464 pages, I think they will have fun with a young kid besting several warriors and journeying on a quest with Jason and Rachel. Not only do they have to solve a puzzle in the form of a magical word, they have to learn who to trust and how to trust each other. Plus, Jason is from CO, which is a big plus in my book. ;)
Not only was there constant struggle and adventure to keep your interest, but there was also a twist ending for this book. One that I quite enjoyed. The villan is not predictable and easy to read as in some MG/YA books and that is what I loved about it. Unfortunately, it is a cliffhanger! *shakes fist* So, I warn you, if you read this book, you will want to know what happens next.
I give this book 4 stars. I recommend it to young readers of adventure. It will be published March 22, 2011
I was given this ebook by the publisher and no compensation for my review was given.
I may have to recommend this one to Jr. High students I know :)
ReplyDeleteInteresting to note that this is one recommended for both boys and girls. Difficult enough to find a good books that appeal to boys anyway, I'm impressed that this will suit both sexes.
ReplyDeleteI haven't made enough time as I should to read MG books. I definitely need to do that. The adventures included in this one sound thrilling, but it does seem like a pretty big book for young readers. My little cousins are still into picture books at they are 10 and 11! LOL
ReplyDeleteI've been seeing this one around a lot lately, and though I'm not huge into MG books, this one does sound really good and really entertaining. Not pumped about the cliffhanger ending though, these endings are going to give me an ulcer I swear! Nice review Melissa:)
ReplyDeleteWow, MG books are so much bigger than when I was young, now that sounds like it was eons ago, lol
ReplyDeleteI was reading MG books when I was a young adult...uh, actually, I'm reading them now at my advanced, decrepit age.
ReplyDelete@Felicia... I've read a couple of reviews by young boys and they loved it.
ReplyDelete@...Petty... I really think it would since there is both a boy and girl as the top players in this adventure.
@Missie... Do eet! :) Hey, I'm into picture books at my age... especially if they have those pics everyone is posting of their book boyfriends. ;D
@Jenny...It's not bad until you fall off the cliff! I know what you mean. I hate cliffhangers!
@Blodeuedd... yea... right... sure... you youngin'
@Stephanie... Would you like to borrow my cane? I think there are some kids on your lawn. :)
Oh you got this one!?!!! Errrrr. You are really trying to bring that tbr pile and want list up in the numbers aren't you. I already was tempted to add it to my want list, but now you are making me do it. Thank you! :)
ReplyDelete@Melissa... *evil laugh*
ReplyDeleteI haven't read this book yet, but my sister reviewed it on my blog. After reading your review, I really want to read the book.
