As You Wish (Time of Transition #2) by Gabi Stevens: Review by AimeeKay

Born into a magical family, Reggie Scott is content to live out her life as a normal human until the moment she’s informed that she’s a newly appointed fairy godmother. Left struggling to deal with powers the never thought she’d have, Reggie faces a curse, a plot to overthrow the Arcani, and an entirely too enthusiastic mother—all in a matter of days.

Jonathan Bastion is a man of power and wealth—and a dangerous secret. He desperately hopes that Reggie's new powers will hold the answer to his problem and he isn't above using her to achieve his goals. What he doesn't expect is how much Reggie will affect him. Her honor, her honesty, and her strength quickly make cracks in his ruthless exterior.

As danger from the Arcani swirls around them both, Jonathan realizes that what was once a ploy to get Reggie to assist him has become a battle to keep her safe and protected…in his arms.
*whew* Flew through this one about as quickly as I did the first. I really enjoyed the world that Gabi Stevens has created. As I said before a great way to describe her world is a Harry Potter for grown-ups. She introduced more of the Arcani society in this one, as well as more of the magical creatures that exist. I love Alfred the gnome and his friends that he brings to help out at the bakery. I also really Reggie's other assistants at the bakery, Joy and Tommy. It was a unique way to work in how the magical world isn't that different from the groundling world when it comes right down to it. In both its people and in the way they can be biased against even their own kind.

As for the main characters, Reggie and Jonathan aren't xerox copies of Kristin and Tennyson. So while they were the main characters, and yes they are each others romantic interest in the story, their story is definitely their own. I think the only real similarities between Kristin and Reggie are that they both didn't have magic til they were 27, they are both strong women and they both think outside the box. Kristin knew nothing of magic til she was thrown into it when she became a fairy godmother. Reggie, however, was born to an Arcani family. She never thought she would get powers, but she knew that magic existed. As for the boys, while they are both incredibly handsome and sexy on the outside, their insides couldn't be more different. Tennyson was a grouch yes, but he wasn't manipulative or trying to take advantage of Kristin. Jonathan however has his secrets and while he eventually falls for Reggie, his intentions aren't as noble as they could be in the beginning.

As for complaints about the story...I had a few, but they weren't major, and they didn't take away from my enjoyment of the story. First there was no scenes with Callie and Zach. Yes I know they are the friends of the hero and heroine of the first book, but I really like Callie, I thought she was sweet and I wanted to find out how things are working out between them.
Also I had pretty much figured out Jonathan and Nate's secrets by the middle of the book. But, as I said before, it didn't take away from my enjoyment of the story and seeing how the author finally revealed their secrets.

It's a romance. Yes it is part of a series, so the story, while not a straight drop cliffie, is still open at the end. But the characters do get their own Happily Ever After at the end. I love those so I'm not complaining I'm just letting those who don't do Romance because it's too predictable know ahead of time. I still think they should give the books a chance though because they are a fun read. Also as a reminder these are not kid books. No matter how pretty the cover or fun they are! There is sex. The story doesn't just act as filler between them, but they are still there. So don't let the little ones read it. As for the adults reading it, the sex scenes are decent and while they are graphic they aren't erotica, so I don't think anyone would be that offended by them. I'm off to read the next book in the series!!!

Also as an added incentive to buy this book, 10% of the royalties from this book are going to support Best Buddies. Very cool!

Thanks again to Melissa for letting me read this one, it's been great so far. Fingers crossed the third one is just as enjoyable.

til next time,
AimeeKay

The Wish List (Time of Transition #1) by Gabi Stevens: Review by AimeeKay

Kristin Montgomery is more than a little shocked when her aunts inform her they're fairy godmothers. Worse, after dropping that bombshell they hand her a wand and head off on a world cruise. Now Kristin's uncomplicated life as a CPA in San Diego has disappeared like magic and she not only has to deal with her burgeoning magical powers, but also a reluctant and distractingly sexy magical arbiter.
Tennyson Ritter is a historian. A scholar by choice, he is yanked from his studies to act as arbiter for the newly chosen fairy godmother. He doesn't want to waste his time with a woman who doesn't know anything about magic or the magical world, but soon the beguiling Kristin draws him away from his books and into her life.
But before Kristin can hone her skills and pass the tests necessary to fully claim her powers, she and Tennyson must work together to defend the world - both magical and human - against those that would claim her powers for their own.

OMG, so have I said before I LOVE Happily Ever Afters? oooo and this one eeep!! It is left open ended for the next book, but I still think it qualifies as a Happily Ever After for the two main characters. So definitely have to say...LOVED IT!

To be honest I didn't know I would end up liking this one as much as I did. Reading the back of the book I knew what was coming obviously. Even before the main character did. For example, I knew that the "aunties" weren't off their rockers when they told Kristin that she was chosen to be one of the next fairy godmothers. Since I enjoy fantasy WAY more than reality I kinda tapped my foot in impatience for the first few pages of the book, waiting for the moment when the magic would begin. But once it did...WHEW!...it just took off!

I loved Kristen from the beginning. Her firm grounding in reality was a nice contrast to the magic that she was tossed into. The fairy godmothers were wonderful too though. They were just the right combination of absentmindedness and grandmotherly good will. I adored them. I even enjoyed some of the side characters.

While some parts of the story I figured out right away, what can I say I've read a lot of stories and I always enjoying guessing who the mole is, there were enough twists that even I wasn't completely sure until it was revealed. Plus I love a good romance. The sparks that flew between Kristin and Tennyson were HOT! I count a good romance novel as one that reminds me of romance in my own life. If reading it can bring to mind moments of passion in my own life, even when I'm agitated that the cause of my romance is interrupting a good book, well that right there is bonus points for it. Especially when I'm torn between turning the page and putting the book down to go get my own good smooch. That being said I'm a bookaholic so any interruption is viewed as more of an annoyance when I'm immersed in a good read so of course I had to finish the book first!

Yes they do fall in love before the end of the book. And the romance progressed a bit more rapidly than it would outside the literary world, the relationship between Kristen and Tennyson had some good bite to it. It isn't always moonbeams and rosebuds, and it was fun watching them fight their growing attraction.

If I found any flaw with the story it was that I wish there had been some more fill in for the story of some of the side characters. My main focus is Zach and Callie. I would have loved to have seen more of their part of the story. However the story is told alternating between Kristen's point of view and Tennyson's, so I understand that when Zach or Callie isn't in their part of the story, or anyone else for that matter, that I'm not going to see what they are doing. *SIGH* But overall I really enjoyed this book. It has a semi-cliff hanger ending. More of a lead into the next book, not a sheer drop. Which is always appreciated. There were some things left open, for obvious reasons, and some strings left untied, but they were more of a draw to the next book, not a disappointment. Fortunately for me I have the second and third book in this series in my possession, so I don't have to wait to read them. (In fact I plan on starting as soon as I am done this review!)

That being said a good summery of this book would be that it's a Harry Potter for grown-ups. (and I mean grown-ups, there are some explicate scenes in this one, so no kiddies reading it , k?) There are even a few good direct nods to Ms. Rowling herself. I also kind of enjoyed reading a book with more adult characters, and I don't just mean the Fairy Godmothers. Nothing against YA, it's just a nice break to read an adult book every once in a while.

I highly recommend this one. I started reading it a few days after I got it and I'm already done and writing the review, that should say something right there. I probably would have finished it sooner if it wasn't for people physically tearing me away from the pages.

Thank you Melissa for being kind enough to pass this one on to me!!! (I'm not passing it back by the way. Nopes I's is off to read book 2!)

Hope you all enjoyed the review, I know no great spoilers this time...but what can I say?
Til next time,
AimeeKay

The Prophet (Graveyard Queen #3) by Amanda Stephens

My name is Amelia Gray.
I am the Graveyard Queen, a cemetery restorer who sees ghosts. My father passed down four rules to keep me safe and I've broken every last one. A door has opened and evil wants me back.
In order to protect myself, I've vowed to return to those rules. But the ghost of a murdered cop needs my help to find his killer. The clues lead me to the dark side of Charleston—where witchcraft, root doctors and black magic still flourish—and back to John Devlin, a haunted police detective I should only love from afar. Now I'm faced with a terrible choice: follow the rules or follow my heart.
Yep! I got to read the 3rd book in the Graveyard Queen series and I have to say I was not disappointed. It picks up after the last book, but really the story fills in all the gaps we were missing after the first book. You could miss the second book and not be lost, but I really don't suggest it since it rocked. Plus, some things would just make more sense if you read them in order.

Amelia is coming into her own person for the first time in this series. After events in her life that has shaken things up quite a bit, she is now questioning everything she was taught. She does have quite a way to go in discovering her own power, but I do believe we will see Amelia to continue to grow as the series goes on. Devlin is back in this story and I'm so glad to have him back even though he has become a bit to mysterious for my tastes at the beginning. However he does come clean toward the end. So we even get growth from him as well.

The secondary characters in this group were quite interesting. You didn't know who you could trust and who you couldn't. You didn't know if Amelia would be safe with any of them. Of course Angus makes another appearance in this book and I hope we get to see more of him in the future. For those of you wondering who Angus is... he is her dog. Yes, as a fellow dog lover... I had to mention him again. :)

I give this book 4 1/2 stars. For mystery lovers you will enjoy the twists and turns within this dark story. For paranormal lovers... there is quite enough magic and ghosts to fulfill your liking. For PNR and romance peeps... yep there is a bit of that in here as well. Hm... I guess, I would suggest this one for anyone who enjoys a dark story.

Spirit's Princess (Spirit's Princess #1) by Esther M. Friesner

Himiko the beloved daughter of a chieftain in third century Japan has always been special. The day she was born there was a devastating earthquake, and the tribe's shamaness had an amazing vision revealing the young girl's future—one day this privileged child will be the spiritual and tribal leader over all of the tribes. Book One revolves around the events of Himiko's early teen years—her shaman lessons, friendships, contact with other tribes, and journey to save her family after a series of tragic events. Once again, Esther Friesner masterfully weaves together history, myth, and mysticism in a tale of a princess whose path is far from traditional.
This is an epic tale about the life of Himiko, a young tribal princess in ancient Japan. The character actually did live, but obviously, her story presented here is total fiction. Still, it is interesting to me to take a historical person many of us have never heard of and make her come to life.

This story is also not one of on the edge of your seat adventure as we often get with YA that has magic within. It's more about how Himiko finds herself. How she grows and finds who she really is inside. It is the journey within and the courage it takes to stand up to those that you love for what is important. It is the difference between living and having a life. This is the reason I feel it will get mixed reviews. It isn't something that will immediately capture you, but will slowly make you a part of her life. Plus, not everyone likes a philosophy type of book as I tend to gravitate toward. Just keep that in mind.

I give this story 4 stars. I found it interesting and philosophically interesting. There is adventure, but it is more the journey of self that matters in this book. I feel this is very important for the books coming after this one. It is that journey that will make her the eventual queen of peace. I will warn you that the ending is abrupt (which I dearly hate) but it will end up making you want the next one to see what will happen. I really can't wait to see what will happen and I know I'll be reading that book as soon as I can get my hands on it.

Side note: as I said above she was a real being. There is a wiki page and a blog post from the Heritage of Japan on her. Just thought those of you who are interested in history might like to take a look. :)

The Immortal Rules (Blood of Eden #1) by Julie Kagawa

In a future world, Vampires reign. Humans are blood cattle. And one girl will search for the key to save humanity.
Allison Sekemoto survives in the Fringe, the outermost circle of a vampire city. By day, she and her crew scavenge for food. By night, any one of them could be eaten.
Some days, all that drives Allie is her hatred of them. The vampires who keep humans as blood cattle. Until the night Allie herself is attacked—and given the ultimate choice. Die… or become one of the monsters.
Faced with her own mortality, Allie becomes what she despises most. To survive, she must learn the rules of being immortal, including the most important: go long enough without human blood, and you will go mad.
Then Allie is forced to flee into the unknown, outside her city walls. There she joins a ragged band of humans who are seeking a legend—a possible cure to the disease that killed off most of humankind and created the rabids, the mindless creatures who threaten humans and vampires alike.
But it isn't easy to pass for human. Especially not around Zeke, who might see past the monster inside her. And Allie soon must decide what—and who—is worth dying for.
Vampires? Zombies (well, zombie like creatures... I'm calling them that)? Dystopian? Julie Kagawa? Oh yea... you know I wanted to read this book and I tell you I wasn't disappointed in the least!

This book was very thrilling, gripping, emotional and just plain fun. I was on the edge of my seat several times and I was totally invested in Allie's tale. It was a book that was hard for me to put down. Oh yes... if you are wanting a dark paranormal YA book, it's this one. Julie Kagawa knows how to write suspense and darkness. You will love it.

There were secondary characters you will love/hate/feel ambivalent about. Yep, it runs the gammit. Some you were certain that they were evil, but really even if you hated their behavior (Jeb, *cough*) you still see them doing the best that they could with what little information they had. You weren't even sure if the the goal certain groups had in mind were true or even possible. So the frustration you felt during their journey was intentional and well crafted.

I don't want to say more because I am tempted to spill the whole story. I give this book 5 stars and suggest that everyone read this book. My biggest complaint? The cover and the vid look nothing like the character of Allie... but that isn't the fault of the author or the book.

Showers of Books Giveaway Hop

To shower you with books (one that fits the header this month.. LOL) I'm going to give away 3 books! Since I have to foot the bill of shipping, it's US only. Sorry international peeps. I still love ya! Really I do!!

The MPB books are...

Blood Rights (House of the Comarré #1) by Kristen Painter
The lacy gold mapped her entire body. A finely-wrought filigree of stars, vines, flowers, butterflies, ancient symbols and words ran from her feet, up her legs, over her narrow waist, spanned her chest and finished down her arms to the tips of her fingers.

Born into a life of secrets and service, Chrysabelle’s body bears the telltale marks of a comarré—a special race of humans bred to feed vampire nobility. When her patron is murdered, she becomes the prime suspect, which sends her running into the mortal world…and into the arms of Malkolm, an outcast vampire cursed to kill every being from whom he drinks.

Now Chrysabelle and Malkolm must work together to stop a plot to merge the mortal and supernatural worlds. If they fail, a chaos unlike anything anyone has ever seen will threaten to reign.
Blood on the Bayou (Anabelle Lee #2) by Stacey Jay
The second book in a new urban fantasy series featuring mosquito-sized fairies with poisonous bites that drive humans insane.
It's only been three weeks since Annabelle helped solve the murder of Grace Beauchamp, and in the process, she discovered a secret world of invisible, magic-working people who have decided she might have what it takes to join their ranks.

As best as she can determine, Annabelle’s attack by a group of fairies has infected her with paranormal ability she did not previously possess, including being able to mentally move objects and heal wounds. Her new abilities appear to have few negative side effects, aside from creepy dreams. But would that change if she stopped injecting herself with the mystery drug delivered to her by the even more mysterious Tucker, one of the Invisibles? Leery of trusting criminals with her health, Annabelle wishes she had someone she could talk to about the changes in her life. Enter Hitch, FBI agent and Annabelle's ex, who's back in Donaldsonville on an off-the-books investigation. Hitch suspects that there's a government-funded illegal lab that’s developing a controversial fairy-killing spray that could adversely affect the existence of every living thing in the delta—including humans. And Hitch and Annabelle will have to find a way to work together if they're going to find a way to shut it down.
and a HC book:

Bad Moon Rising (Dark-Hunter #18, Were-Hunter #5) by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Fang Kattalakis isn't just a wolf. He is the brother of two of the most powerful members of the Omegrion: the ruling council that enforces the laws of the Were-Hunters. And when war erupts among the lycanthropes, sides must be chosen. Enemies are forced into shaky alliances.
When Aimee, the woman Fang loves, is accused of betraying her people, her only hope is that Fang believes in her. Shakespeare Undead (Shakespeare Undead #1) by Lori Handeland

Something wicked this way comes . . . and it keeps coming and coming and coming. . . .

William Shakespeare was one of history's greatest writers, a master of words with a body of work that is truly impressive . . . some may say a little too impressive for a single man to accomplish in one lifetime. Perhaps, as many have speculated, he had assistance. Or perhaps the explanation is more . . . unusual.

Who was William Shakespeare?

Who was the Dark Lady of the Sonnets?

Why are the undead stalking the alleyways of London?

And can they be stopped?

Something is definitely rotten in the state of Denmark.

So brace yourself for a wild ride through twisted streets and shadowed graveyards of Elizabethan London, where you'll discover how the Bard got his Bite.
I have Zombie Isand on the review pile and thought I'd better read the first book. Something told me I would be better off reading these in order (don't faint). So, off I went to the library. Of course the person who had checked it out hadn't brought it back and it was a few weeks overdue. So, I had to wait for the interlibrary loan to come through. What does this have to do with the book? Not much, just wanted to remind you to return your library books. Someone may need it for an upcoming review! ;D

This book takes Shakespeare and makes light of him and his works. So, staunch Shakespearians beware. You must have a sense of humor for this book. The story was a mixture of Shakespeare in Love and paranormal elements. Will is a vampire who has the ability to raise the dead. Kate is someone who was taught to kill zombies from her nanny. Their love story does follow the movie closely and in fact I could see many of the movie elements I recognized in my head. Actually, that sort of made it fun for me.

The parts I didn't care for in the book was the mixture of language. Will would speak in his poetic form but would often suddenly switch to "normal" speech. There was also a back and forth POV between Will and Kate and sometimes it was jarring as you would forget who was speaking for a minute. I had to reread some chapters over because of this. My last complaint is the mixture of contemporary film within his play ideas. It just didn't make sense to me, but I did see where the author was going with those segments. However, I feel it would have been best to have stuck with the plays he wrote at this time.

I give this book 3 stars. Despite my complaints I still found it entertaining. If nothing else, it did make me want to see Shakespeare in Love again. At least this one has a better ending!

(YaY! I finally got my first book up for this challenge!)

My Book Boyfriend

Hosted by The Unread Reader!

I've been reading the Jane Jameson series by Molly Harper so I have to add Gabriel. He is the one who turned Jane and is quite a smexy treat. He is a gentleman and yet has that snarky side Jane is bringing out in him. He is learning to be a little less brooding and a little more fun in his undead life. Even though he keeps Jane a bit in the dark as to their relationship status (I think she should kick him for that), he at least has been a bit help learning the undead ropes.
So, enough talk? Should I show you who I could picture as Gabriel?
Eddie Cibrian! I saw a couple of pics and thought he would fit nicely as Gabriel.
Hee hee... and you thought you would only get the suit! Don't you know me by now???

So... who is in your man harem this week?

Nice Girls Don't Date Dead Men (Jane Jameson #2) by Molly Harper

With her best friend Zeb’s Titanic-themed wedding looming ahead, new vampire Jane Jameson struggles to develop her budding relationship with her enigmatic sire, Gabriel. It seems unfair that she’s expected to master undead dating while dealing with a groom heading for a nuptial nervous breakdown, his hostile werewolf in-laws, and the ugliest bridesmaid dress in the history of marriage. Meanwhile, the passing of Jane’s future step-grandpa puts Grandma Ruthie back on the market. Her new fiancé, Wilbur, has his own history of suspiciously dead spouses, and he may or may not have died ten years ago. Half-Moon Hollow’s own Black Widow has finally met her match. Should Jane warn her grandmother of Wilbur’s marital habits or let things run their course? Will Jane always be an undead bridesmaid, never the undead bride?

Yes, don't faint... I have read 2 books in order! *gets out smelling salts* However, this book, 2nd in a series, can be read as a stand-a-lone. Although, for those that like to read in order, it's nicer to do so since you will have a better feel for the characters in this book.

So what can I say about this book? Oh it was like the first... it made me laugh and completely involved with the characters. I really am enjoying this series. In this book, you do have a few mysteries that Jane stumbles on and tries to solve for her family and friends. Even though those mysteries are easily solved, that isn't the point of this series. To me it is pure entertainment and it achieves that easily.

Jane is still snarky as ever. I enjoy her so much. Love that she keeps comparing herself to Jane Austen characters. Gabriel could use a swift kick in this book, but yet, I still love that brooding vamp who is learning how to laugh again. Also, I enjoyed Dick Chaney. Yep... Dick Chaney. But not related to you know who (heh)... he is a much less evil version, even as a blood sucking vamp. Also, much more entertaining as well. ;) Dick commands a bigger presence in this one and your funny bone with thank Molly for that. Also, there are some sweet moments especially with her boss Mr. Wainwright.

So yes... this book has it all. I give it 4 stars and recommend it to anyone wanting to give their funny bone a workout.

Nice Girls Don't Have Fangs (Jane Jameson #1) by Molly Harper

Maybe it was the Shenanigans gift certificate that put her over the edge. When children's librarian and self-professed nice girl Jane Jameson is fired by her beastly boss and handed twenty-five dollars in potato skins instead of a severance check, she goes on a bender that's sure to become Half Moon Hollow legend. On her way home, she's mistaken for a deer, shot, and left for dead. And thanks to the mysterious stranger she met while chugging neon-colored cocktails, she wakes up with a decidedly unladylike thirst for blood.
Jane is now the latest recipient of a gift basket from the Newly Undead Welcoming Committee, and her life-after-lifestyle is taking some getting used to. Her recently deceased favorite aunt is now her ghostly roommate. She has to fake breathing and endure daytime hours to avoid coming out of the coffin to her family. She's forced to forgo her favorite down-home Southern cooking for bags of O negative. Her relationship with her sexy, mercurial vampire sire keeps running hot and cold. And if all that wasn't enough, it looks like someone in Half Moon Hollow is trying to frame her for a series of vampire murders. What's a nice undead girl to do?
Jane had a very bad, awful day. She got fired, got a gift certificate to get drunk as her severance pay. Decided to blow through the certificate and then while going home (after getting sober), the car breaks down. Of course when she tries to walk home, the neighborhood drunk thinks she is a deer and shoots her down. Wow... and I thought I had a horrible days.

Well, Jane obviously doesn't get killed but gets turned into a vampire. Her adventure in dealing with her new undead status is interesting and humorous. However, that is not all. She also has to deal with being accused of vampire murder and someone trying to make her un-life very hard. All this accumulates into an unexpected and humorous ending.

Oh yes... I know I've said humorous more than once. I LOL'd in this book a lot. I had so much fun with Jane and her adventures. She is also a heroine I love. She loves to read. She is snarky and loves her dog which she calls a mixture of a great dane and a loofa. How could I not enjoy all that?

My biggest complaints about this book is at the beginning there was so much going on it left my head spinning a bit. It was hard to keep track of everything, but it calms down toward the middle and you are sailing along by the end. My only other complaint was the name of an annoying vamp. Missy. NO! No one named Missy should EVER be annoying in a book! *cries*

I give this book 4 stars and I tell you you need to get this one if you want a good laugh. Only thing is when you read Missy... substitute some other name in your head for me, will ya?
I received this book from the publisher, Simon and Scuhuster/Pocket and no compensation for my review was given.

I don't require this usually since I read books beyond my years when I was younger, but since this is a how-to and not a work of fiction, I decided I would do it this time. Ruby's Birthday Giveaway Hop!

Happy Birthday Ruby!!
She is celebrating with you! How cool is that?
So... I'm helping Ruby of Ruby's Reads celebrate her birthday!!
For this stop... I'm giving away the ebook of...

Half-Blood (Covenant #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout
The Hematoi descend from the unions of gods and mortals, and the children of two Hematoi-pure-bloods-have godlike powers. Children of Hematoi and mortals-well, not so much. Half-bloods only have two options: become trained Sentinels who hunt and kill daimons or become servants in the homes of the pures. Seventeen-year-old Alexandria would rather risk her life fighting than waste it scrubbing toilets, but she may end up slumming it anyway. There are several rules that students at the Covenant must follow. Alex has problems with them all, but especially rule #1:Relationships between pures and halfs are forbidden. Unfortunately, she's crushing hard on the totally hot pure-blood Aiden. But falling for Aiden isn't her biggest problem--staying alive long enough to graduate the Covenant and become a Sentinel is. If she fails in her duty, she faces a future worse than death or slavery: being turned into a daimon, and being hunted by Aiden. And that would kind of suck.
Why? Well, first, I think the series rocks. The second one just came out and for those yet to read it, I thought you needed to get started NOW! I did like this book more than Ruby did and this is also my way of telling her she needs to read the second book. The tension she wanted I do believe is there in Pure. ;) You will like Seth in that one. :D

Anyhoo... my giveaway is international because it is an ebook. I'll be giving it away through Amazon or B&N. Just fill out the rafflecopter form below!

Earthseed (Seed #1) by Pamela Sargent with International Giveaway!

The classic YA science fiction adventure by Nebula and Locus Award–winning author Pamela Sargent The ship hurtles through space. Deep within its core, it carries the seed of humankind. Launched by the people of a dying Earth over a century ago, its mission is to find a habitable world for the children—fifteen-year-old Zoheret and her shipmates—whom it has created from its genetic banks.
To Zoheret and her shipmates, Ship has been mother, father, and loving teacher, preparing them for their biggest challenge: to survive on their own, on an uninhabited planet, without Ship’s protection. Now that day is almost upon them...but are they ready to leave Ship? Ship devises a test. And suddenly, instincts that have been latent for over a hundred years take over. Zoheret watches as friends become strangers—and enemies. Can Zoheret and her companions overcome the biggest obstacle to the survival of the human race—themselves?
This is an older YA sci-fi genre book. It's considered "older" YA because of the amount of smex (nothing graphic) mentioned and violence. However, it makes sense since it is a group of teens that have never had adults to learn from, only a "ship" who is really just a personable voice to them. They were born in a lab.

Within the ship they are sent to a part where it is "wild" with nature and wild animals. They are there to learn how to survive because the goal is to "seed" other areas of the universe with thriving earthlings. While they are living in the "hollow" and coming of age, they find that tensions arise and problems within the society they created are dramatic and tense. Arguments on leadership and punishment while maintaining a utopian view within tensions arise. You also question what you would do in the same situation. No easy answers were found nor provided.

The book ends as a full book even though it is a trilogy. There is an opening for further exploration and unless you read the excerpt for the next book, you aren't sure where the series will take you. You just know it will be another adventure filled ride when you get there.

I give this book 3 stars. Although Zoheret is well defined, some of the secondary characters lack a bit in definition. However, the adventure the characters find themselves in do make up for that lack. Those that shy away from sci-fi because of the tech talk do not need to worry. It is more about the adventure of survival that is the focus of this book.
I received this book from the publisher Tor, and no compensation for my review was given.

This book was recently optioned by Paramount. I'm curious as to how it will show on the big screen. In honor of this the book has been reissued and I have been allowed by Tor to giveaway a copy of the book. Oh and guess what? It's INTERNATIONAL! Whee! Just fill out the rafflecopter form below:

Pure (Covenant #2) by Jennifer L. Armentrout Blog Tour

Pure Blog Tour
There is need. And then there is Fate...

Being destined to become some kind of supernatural electrical outlet isn't exactly awesome--especially when Alexandria's "other half" is everywhere she goes. Seth's in her training room, outside her classes, and keeps showing up in her bedroom--so not cool. Their connection does have some benefits, like staving off her nightmares of the tragic showdown with her mother, but it has no effect on what Alex feels for the forbidden, pure-blooded Aiden. Or what he will do--and sacrifice--for her.

When daimons infiltrate the Covenants and attack students, the gods send furies--lesser gods determined to eradicate any threat to the Covenants and to the gods, and that includes the Apollyon... and Alex. And if that and hordes of aether-sucking monsters didn't blow bad enough, a mysterious threat seems willing to do anything to neutralize Seth, even if that means forcing Alex into servitude... or killing her.

When the gods are involved, some decisions can never, ever be undone.
First I must start this review by saying that I admit... I'm such a fan of this series. I love the way it draws me into the story and keeps me wanting to stay after it's over. Plus, it has such a swoon-worthy cast. Especially in Aiden. *sigh*

Yes, I love her characters and they are further enhanced within this story. The story also had me cycle through a lot of emotions including almost sobbing. Yes, I cried and if you read any of my reviews or comments... you know I hate to cry. But then Ms. Armentrout broke my heart. Not just once, but several times over the same event. The tissue companies should sponsor this book. ;) However, those that feel the same way, take heart. You will also laugh a lot in the book as well. I just love that about Alex, the main character. Her snark makes my day and I would SO be her friend.

It also deals with a lot of issues. Mental rape, slavery and racism, also present itself here. Heavy handed topics that are dealt with in a way that doesn't overwhelm but still makes you want to yell to those in charge that it isn't fair... or at least kick them in the arse repeatedly.

Ah this book I did love, except for the ending (and the crying). I wanted it to continue. My questions weren't answered and I found myself adding a few more. I know that Deity (Covenant #3) will be here in Nov. However, it's not soon enough. *sigh* I curse Ms. Armentrout for leaving me too soon with a bunch of crumpled tissues surrounding me. *shakes fist* However, I will forgive her if she makes Aiden real and gives him to me. I mean, it's only fair... right? ;D

I give this book 4 1/2 stars. I can't wait to continue this series!!
I was given this ARC by the publisher, Spencer Hill Press and no compensation for my review was given.

West of Want Book Tour by Laura Kaye

Meet WEST OF WANT’s Characters & Get Ready to Win!

In just a few days, I’m going to be hosting a huge Preview & Prizes Event at over 40 blogs to celebrate April 10, the original release date for Book 2 in my Hearts of the Anemoi series, West of Want. In the past few months, some really cool things happened: my publisher, Entangled Publishing, signed a huge deal with the nation’s biggest book distributor, which means for the first time ever, my books will be shelved in brick-and-mortar bookstores. And then, West of Want received a very nice pre-sales estimate by the booksellers and Barnes and Nobles bought it for all their stores nationwide (and it got bought for airports, too—squee!). The only bad news in this whole scenario was this: the release date got pushed back, by three LONG months! LOL So, I thought I’d celebrate the original release date with a preview of the book and a big contest, and give you a small taste to whet your appetite until the actual release date arrives.

Beginning on April 10, I’m going to be giving away hundreds of dollars in prizes and gift cards. So, to get you excited for that—and for exclusive, never-before-shared excerpts from the book itself—I thought I’d introduce you to the hero and heroine to give you a taste of things to come. And, take a look at these brand-spanking-new romance trading cards for West of Want, being shared for the first time here!

First, WEST OF WANT’s Blurb:

Betrayal is all he's ever known, but in her, he'll find a love strong enough to be trusted...

When Marcella Raines' twin brother dies, she honors his request to be buried at sea, never expecting the violent storm that swamps her boat. Though she's gravely injured--and still emotionally damaged from her recent divorce--Ella fights to survive.

Zephyros Martius is the Supreme God of the West Wind and Spring, but being the strongest Anemoi hasn't protected him from betrayal and loss. Worse, he's sure his brother Eurus is behind it. When Zeph's heartbreak whips up a storm that shipwrecks a human, his guilt forces him to save her.

Ella is drawn to the vulnerability Zeph hides beneath his otherworldly masculinity and ancient blue eyes. And her honesty, empathy, and unique, calming influence leave Zeph wanting...everything. When Eurus threatens Ella, she and Zeph struggle to let go of the past, defend their future, and embrace what they most want--a love that can be trusted.

"Laura Kaye’s captivating writing and vibrant world-building will have readers hooked on the gods of the Anemoi. WEST OF WANT is steamy, spellbinding, and a must-read for all romance fantasy fans."

~Elisabeth Naughton, author of the Eternal Guardians series

MEET HERO ZEPHYROS MARTIUS:

Ella’s first impression of Zeph: Zephyros was fierce masculinity personified. Ella couldn’t stop her brain from resurrecting the image of Zeph tearing off his shirt as he sat on the edge of her bed. As if the man’s broad shoulders and bulging biceps weren’t impressive enough. As if the ridged muscles of his abdomen didn’t just call out to be traced. She had absolutely never seen with her own eyes, on a real man, that incredible cut of muscle just above his hips. But, yeah, he had it, and then some.

Zeph’s Job: Supreme God of the West Wind and Spring, one of the four Cardinal Anemoi

3 Words that Describe Zeph: Loyal, Powerful, Tortured

3 Things he Loves about Heroine Ella Raines: Her acceptance, her belief in him, her passion

MEET HEROINE ELLA RAINES:

One of Zeph’s early impressions of Ella:

He was ancient. He was immortal. He was a god. Yet this slip of a mortal woman pulled the ground out from under him over and over again. And she didn’t even know he was there.

Or maybe she did?

Every time he convinced himself to go, she said or did something that intrigued him. Or, worse, concerned him, and he’d find himself negotiating for just a little more time. Her pleased reaction to his flowers, her lie to the doctor and nurses, her pain at seeing her own reflection, at having that young doctor poke and prod her ruined shoulder. He couldn’t leave. In truth, he didn’t want to.

Ella’s Job: Ella is between jobs, having recently come into an inheritance, but, a life-long sailor, she’s looking at volunteering full-time for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation

3 Words that Describe Ella: Survivor, Adventurous, Strong

3 Things she Loves about Hero Zephyros Martius: That he’s survived so many tragedies and is still so kind and loving, the man beneath the otherworldliness, his strength
