1. In a moment of anger, Atticus reveals something about himself that he usually keeps very secret, for his own benefit. Has something similar ever happened to you? Have you ever spilled a closely guarded secret in a moment of excitement or anger or absent-mindedness?

Never! I've always been a mermaid, it's just that... oh crap...

2. Atticus tells Mrs. MacDonagh, "the universe is exactly the size that your soul can encompass. Some people live in extremely small worlds, and some live in a world of infinite possibility." Then he asks her what she is going to do with the new information she has discovered. What would you do if you found out that other beings were among us? Would you deny it or embrace it?

First, I love that quote. I'd like to think that I'd embrace it. I'd have questions though... lots of questions. Uh... wait... what are you trying to tell us??? :D

3. So far, Atticus has revealed a few of his powers and has even shared some power by putting bindings on Granuaile. What do you think has been his coolest or most helpful power so far?

I think drawing strength from the earth itself. He heals and is given his powers from that energy. Most useful power and I do believe one of the coolest. I'd so have those tats if I could do that. :)

4. Atticus gets pretty pissed when he finds out that Aenghus Óg is drawing power from the Earth and, in turn, killing it. That's when Atticus decides he must fight the old Fae for committing such a heinous offense. What is something you would fight for, even if it meant you might die trying?

The ones I love. :)

5. What did you think of the final showdown between Atticus and Aenghus Óg? Did it go down the way you expected? Was there anything about their battle that surprised you?

I didn't really expect anything because I didn't know how the gods/fae fought in this world. I was surprised that Laksha wasn't more involved. I also would have liked to know more about her powers in particular. I think I was also surprised that Bridget and Flidas were in on getting him to fight. However, it also made a lot of sense given who and what they were.

6. What was your favorite/least favorite part of Hounded? Who was your favorite/least favorite character?

Least fave characters were, of course, the witches. I didn't really feel that the witches were being coerced but were acting on their own selfish impulses. Not to say that Aenghus was fine with me, but you expected him to be a total jerk. :)


My fave parts were Oberon. I also had a tiny bit of a problem with him as well. He read too human than hound to me, but at the same time, I wouldn't change anything because it was too entertaining. :D

7. What do you think is coming up next for Atticus? Will you continue reading this series, and if so, what do you hope to see happen in the next book?

Hm... I'd like to see more adventures. :) More Oberon *gives sausage*. Love more of the widow. She just rocks. And yes, I do have the next 2 on my tbr so I will be continuing reading this series. :D

This is an important book for all teens getting into dating, starting relationships, getting boyfriends and girlfriends. This one is geared more toward girls because the problem of abusive relationships tend to statistically affect girls more than guys. 

The story revolves around Alex who has a broken home where she has been ignored by her father. The hole that creates and the uncertainty of her mother's death paves the way for a relationship that becomes all consuming. Psychologically accurate, the story shows how the abuser is not a cad right away, but seems very charming. It also shows the "honeymoon" phase that often happens shortly after a escalated incident. Even after she was hit, it shows how easily confused Alex becomes. How she blames herself fo the incident. I also found her emotions of not wanting to be the focus of attention of being "that girl that was hit" also accurate especially with teens. Yes, this resonated very accurate to me.

My main criticisms of the book is that I would have liked perhaps a bit more involvement with the family. While it is true that a non-involved father creates a space for someone to easily swoop in and manipulate, it has also happened to girls who have involved parents. I also would have liked to have had more of the "little" abuses thrown into the relationship. We get to see some of that, but only toward the end of the book. These are little criticisms but not essential to the story we have. It still reads true.

I give this book 4 stars. It is a great coming of age book and shows a girl caught up in a situation she doesn't know how to handle. It also shows the strength of character it takes to stand up to someone you "love" and leave. 

Oh and PS... you will love her best friend Zack. He just rocks. :D

Author Guest Post Dakota Banks and International Giveaway!

Maliha Crayne, the main character of the Mortal Path series, is on a journey back to humanity. She started out as wife, healer, and mother-to-be in the American colonies in the laste 1600s. She was betrayed by her townsfolk and one woman in particular, a woman who wanted Maliha out of the picture in order to claim Maliha’s husband. Dramatic events turned Maliha into a person who sold her soul to an ancient Sumerian demon, who promised her immortality in exchange for doing his bidding. She became Ageless, with special powers to help her perform the demon’s killing assignments, and she was no longer human. For hundreds of years she used humans for her purposes, whether it was to keep her in good standing with the demon, to accumulate wealth, or for sex. From her viewpoint, things were sweet and there was no reason to change. Life went by decade after decade as she stayed young and beautiful.

Gradually, the woman she had been began to resurface. Her decadent life felt shallow and she found the assassination assignments she was given more and more abhorrent. Finally, she was given an assignment she couldn’t bear to carry out, so she confronted her demon and broke her contract, expecting to die. Instead, she found that the demon’s ruling god had forced a clause into her contract, a way out, a way to reclaim her soul. An unlikely one, but a chance at which she could grasp. She had to save a life for every life she’d taken under the demon’s command. She took the deal and started her long journey on the mortal path, a quest to recover her humanity and redeem her soul. So we have a woman who wants to be human with all of her heart, who longs for normal relationships, friends, a soulmate, a family—to just return to being human.

Okay, stop there.

There’s a TV program on the SyFy channel called “Being Human,” modeled after a popular British drama of the same name. In it, Aidan, a vampire, and Josh, a werewolf are roommates. They are joined by Sally, a ghost who haunts the premises. Sally was engaged to the landlord, who killed her, and she is now stuck in the home. It’s a violent, sexy show, but I can’t complain because the Mortal Path contains both of those elements.

The question is, are these characters sincere in wanting to restrain their paranormal natures, or are they just mouthing the words? Speaking of mouthing the words, here is something Aidan has said: “Nothing else in the world feels better than giving in to your inner monster.” Aidan is a little younger than Maliha, and swore off drinking live blood sometime before the series started on TV. That doesn’t seem to have stopped him from nipping an occasional mouthful, although he has used his powers in a few instances to kill baddies. Currently having an affair with Suren, the 700-year-old daughter of Mother, a supremely powerful vampire, Aidan seems to be responding as Suren tries to lead him back into the normal ways of vampire life. I give him a 2 out of 10 for trying to be human.

Josh, the werewolf, can’t control his monthly full-moon transformations, so all he can do is try to be in a place where he won’t harm anyone when he does transform. A group of vampires forced Josh into a fight with another were, and he won, killing the other werewolf. Josh seemed genuiinely upset by this, to his credit. He transformed his girlfriend into a werewolf because he had been trapped in a room with her when he transformed, and he scratched her. A major setback for Josh! When his girlfriend became pregnant, Josh planned to go to medical school to support his family, some positive points for him. When she loses the baby, he decides to cancel his plans and instead devote himself to finding a cure for lycanthropy. Somehow the viewer never gets much faith that Josh will succeed, and is only fooling himself. I give Josh a 4.5 out 10 rating for trying to be human.

Sally started the series as an insecure ghost who hadn’t come to terms with the facts of her own death. She grows more knowledgable about her powers and figures out that her then-fiancé killed her. Scheming with Aidan, she gets the man to turn himself in to the police for her murder. All seems well, and then Sally takes a weird turn in the story. After missing her chance to move on through her white door, she gradually finds out that she has a dark side in her, a Reaper who harvests the spirits of other ghosts, punching them through the heart and preventing them from achieving their own white doors. She also learns to possess live peoples’ bodies and does it for casual reasons like enjoying sex. I give Sally a .5 out of 10 for trying to be human. ;-)

On average, then, the characters seem to me to be 23% sincere in their quest to be human, mostly because of Josh. I’d say the TV show uses its paranormal characters to show that the title “Being Human” is ironic—they may struggle, but can’t alter their basic natures, at least not much.

What about Maliha?

Since I know Maliha well, I can say that she’s about 95% determined to walk the Mortal Path. Every now and then she thinks how much easier her goals would be to accomplish if she slipped back into the methods used by the Black Ghost, the nickname she had as the demon’s assassin. No worrying about peoples’ feelings. Not caring if there’s collateral damage on her missions. Not having to be concernced about the safety of her friends. There’s a lot of freedom in operating as the Black Ghost, but there isn’t any humanity in it.

If you’ve seen the “Being Human” program, what’s your opinion of it? Is it truly a quest for humanity by Aidan, Josh, and Sally?

This is a series that has been very emotional for me. The first two in the series, Dark Time and Sacrifice had me wanting to throw them both in the freezer (Joey, Friends ref). Emotional events that took me by surprise and had me wanting it to turn out differently upset me, but in a good way. In this book, it really is no less emotional, but didn't have me running for the freezer. The emotional elements were less surprising as well but no less entertaining.

In this book, Maliha is fully on her mortal path. Trying to balance the scales to gain her soul back. She is trying to find her new moral values within the path she has taken. She questions herself a lot in this book and even is reprimanded by other's who she values as well as herself. She finds that sometimes it is good to be the assassin and keep her emotions in check to do the impossible. Sometimes it's also good to let those emotions rule as well. It is this balance Maliha struggles with in this book.

The book, as with the others in the series, is fast paced and we are met with horrific villans to conquer. We also find out who is friend or foe with most of the characters in this book. We also are left in the dark with Maliha as to which powerful players have a hidden agenda. It's those players we are concerned about and yet have to trust. A difficult postion to be left in that will continue to the next book in the series.

I give this book 4 stars. It's a great addition to Maliha's journey on the mortal path. It should also appeal to those fans of UF who love a character with growth. This book is published today!!

I really enjoyed book 1 of this adventure. Hades has been one of my favorite characters to have remake stories. There is something about the brooding dark character that seems to have so much possibilities and possible depth. In this story, however, I did find Henry (Hades) a bit lacking in depth. In fact he ticked me off.

Kate was also not the heroine we met in book 1, The Goddess Test. Very unsure of how she fits into Henry's heart was a constant worry. Despite the number of times she tried to engage Henry in a discussion he avoided it and her. She even became clear in exactly what she needed and again, Henry denied her simple knowledge as to how he felt. Nothing in what she was asking was too much and I felt she was actually brave in acknowledging and asking for what she needed. How many adults do that? Henry needed a boot and everyone else telling her to just accept it and not ask for what she needed also needed the boot. I'm glad she did insist and ignored everyone. However, I must admit that even though I felt she was justified in her laments, it did become a bit excessive in the story. I would have liked her to concentrate a lot more on the possible destruction of the world. It would have given her character a lot more inner strength.

I give this book 3 stars. I enjoyed the further introduction of the Greek mythology into this story, but found Kate a bit lacking in strength we saw in the previous book. I also warn you of a cliffie at the end. I  will be reading the next book because have to know how the story ends. I also I haven't given up on having a strong Kate again.

1. Just after Atticus is shot, Oberon has to "ninja" his way out of the shop and into Hal's Beamer (with the icky air freshener). Have you ever been in a situation where you had to "ninja" your way out and try not to be discovered? If so, what happened?

Not that I can think of or chose to remember. LOL I know if I tried to "ninja" my way in or out of anything I'd trip. *sigh* Yes, I'm coordinated like that. :)

2. Atticus's main goal through a large portion of the book is not only protecting Oberon, but also protecting the sword. You are now living in a paranormal world and you need a weapon! What weapon do you choose and what can it do?

My first choice of weapon would be a smexy were or vampire. Oh wait... weapon.. not eye candy! Hm.. perhaps a sword. However, I don't know how to use said sword, so I'll probably end up cutting off my own fingers. Perhaps my best bet is to find a way to avoid true fighting and run! Hey, no shame in staying alive. :D

3. To recharge and heal after being shot, Atticus sleeps naked, tattoos to the earth, in a patch of grass near the Civic Center in downtown Scottsdale. Where is the weirdest place you have ever slept?

Probably in a van near a field of corn. Sadly, not very interesting at all. There was no room at the inn so to speak so I slept there with my dog. Not very comfortable.

4. We finally find out some very interesting information about Granuaile and I don't know about you, but I certainly wasn't expecting to find that she's sharing her head with someone else. What about you, did you expect anything along those lines? If not, what were you expecting concerning Granuaile?

I knew she knew more than what she was saying. In fact Atticus suspected she was more than human. I didn't suspect her sharing a body, but then I wasn't suspecting much. I was just letting it unfold before me.

5. Laksha is a witch, a truly evil one at that for many of the things she's done in the past. However, she's supposedly seen the error of her ways. Do you think she really has? Would you be willing to trust her? Do you think Atticus is smart to have decided to trust her to help him with the "other" witches?

Has she seen the error of her ways? I think there is good reason for her playing nice right now. No, I would not be too willing to trust her at lest completely. I would trust that her goals are true and in that (as long as they coincide) I would trust her doing her part. Since Atticus's goals are the same (or close to it) he can trust that she will help with the other witches, but always know that there can and most likely is something more "up her sleeve" so to speak.

Untouched (The Amoveo Legend #2) by Sara Humphreys

The Amoveo are shape-shifting animal clans who live secretly among humans and must find their pre-destined soul mate while avoiding the enemy that seeks to destroy them all.  

Beautiful plus-size model Kerry Smithson appears to have it all, but inside she harbors a crippling secret and avoids all physical contact. Until she encounters gorgeous Dante Coltari, an Amoveo shifter. In her, he believes he has finally found his life mate. But how does he convince her...and keep her safe?

HA! Just when you thought I wouldn't do it again... I did it again. I read out of order. I didn't realize that it was #2 but with this book, I wasn't lost and I could connect with the characters easily. I think that has mostly to do with each book presenting a couple within the Amoveo legend. However, I do want to read the first so I'm introduced properly with everyone.

This book is Dante and Kerry's story. Kerry has a gift or as she sees it a curse. She has only been able to get close to a couple of people her entire life. Otherwise she is inundated with feelings and images from anyone she touches. Plus, it hurts her physically. Sam, her best friend is the only one she is willing to touch because it doesn't hurt. She is surprised when it happens again, this time with the smexy Dante.

The story of Dante and Kerry seemed to move a bit too fast for me. I enjoyed their back and forth but the romance seemed a bit rushed because of Kerry being so crippled by her past experiences. However, I still found the two a lot of fun to read. I think that is mainly because Kerry was no shrinking violet.

There is a lot of action and a bit of a mystery as to why and who is trying to come between the two of them. You also know that this vendetta goes beyond just the couple and encompasses all the couples. It involves prejudices because the couples are "mixed". Not exactly in race, but species. Kerry and her best friend Sam are not full-blooded Amoveo, but mixed with human DNA. I kinda liked that twist in the stories.

I give this book 3 1/2 stars. It is a fun PNR and the men are quite smexy. I am looking forward to the next (and the first) installment of the Amoveo Legends.

Yep, I did it again. I read #4 before reading #1. Oh and in this case I really shouldn't have done that. I was lost, never connected to the characters, BUT seriously, I really want to read this series from the beginning. Why? Well...

It has to do with a very powerful vampire that cannot be killed and has Alzheimer's. He is a true immortal by night and a vampire by day (Murphy's law and all that). His daughter is feared and is quite insane. I mean she not only has daddy issues, but mommy ones as well. She sleeps in the trunk of his Mustang with the bones from the car's diet (yes, it's alive!). There is a "mouser" who is a creature that can become human. And in the case of Talbot, well, he can eat huge demons without getting any kind of gastric upset. There are also plenty of powerful mages, demons and unsuspecting cattle... uh I mean humans who all live in Void city. 

Oh and I can't forget the chupacabra. How could I forget them?

Through it all, there is some demon trying to control Eric and a huge plan to put it to rights, but he can't remember exactly what that plan entails. Good thing he has an app for that. Yes, seriously, he has an app for that. 

Now that I have you scratching your heads in this completely insane group of monsters and a strange task, doesn't it sound interesting? Yes, this is a series I will start from book one. Just don't follow my lead and start with this one. You will be lost. AND I do mean lost. However, even if it ends up not making much more sense than it does now, I do think I'll be able to connect to these characters when I follow their adventures from the beginning. I'd be happy with that. :)

A Q&A with 

New York Times Best Selling Author Julie Kagawa

After writing the Iron Fey series for so many years, how difficult was it to immerse yourself in a futuristic world filled with vampires, rabids and an enslaved human race?

It was...very different.  I think the hardest thing for me was the fact that this story does take place in the real world -- a futuristic, vampire-infested world, but the real world nonetheless.  Things had to make sense, for example: how far can a large group walk in a single day if there were no roads, they were going through thick woods, and there were children in the group?  I had to have logical reasons for everything; I couldn't just make something work "because of faery magic," lol.

Just like Meghan Chase in the Iron Fey series, the main character in The Immortal Rules, Allison Sekemoto, is a “take charge and kick butt” kind of girl.  Is this intentional? What woman – real or fictional, alive or deceased – do you look up to or admire?

Yes, Allison comes from a very different world than Meghan Chase.  Meghan's upbringing was pretty normal; Allison grew up among vampires and monsters, where every day was a fight to live, so she couldn't afford to be weak.  While Meghan had to learn to "take charge and kick butt," Allison's first impulse is stab first, talk later.  

As for female role models, the first that comes to mind--when it comes to kicking vampire butt, anyway -- is Buffy Summers.  Thank you, Joss Whedon, for making me love feisty, snarky, heroines who can dust all sorts of nasties but who also look good in a cheerleading outfit. ;)  

You mention in your acknowledgements in The Immortal Rules that at the beginning of your writing career you promised yourself you wouldn’t write a vampire book.  What changed your mind?

Well, there were already so many really good books about our favorite bloodsuckers, so many stories and ideas, I thought I didn't have anything new to add to the masses.  I was actually toying with a post-apocalyptic YA novel when my agent mentioned I might want to try writing a vampire series.  I wasn't intrigued with the idea at first, but then I thought about combining vampires with the post-apocalyptic novel and then rest sort of fell into place.   

Allison claims she hates vampires and believes they are monsters yet when faced with a choice of die or become one, she becomes a vampire.  Would you have made that same decision?  

Me personally?  No.  I'm like Zeke in the belief that there is something better waiting for me beyond this life, and I just have to do my best until it’s time for me to go.  Besides, I love pizza and Mountain Dew too much to give it up.

Who do you think the most complex character is in The Immortal Rules?

Probably Kanin, Allie's sire.  He's a vampire who has made his peace about being a monster, yet chooses to live by his own set of moral rules.  He warns Allison about getting too close to humans, yet he does not kill unless he absolutely has to.  He is tormented about something in his past that he refuses to share with anyone.  He is certainly the most mysterious of all the characters, if not the most complex.

How many books will be in the Blood of Eden series?  When will the next book be coming out?

At the moment, there are three books planned, with the second coming out sometime next spring, after the release of the new Iron Fey series this fall.

Before you starting writing full time you were a professional dog trainer.  Do the professions share any similarities?

Lol, well you have to think on your feet a lot.  And some of the small dogs could be compared to tiny snapping goblins, but writing requires less dodging skills, though perhaps the same amount of creativity and problem solving.

When starting a new series, like Blood of Eden, do you have the entire series mapped out in detail or do you let the story develop book by book?

I have a high point that I write toward in each story; I know this and this has to happen, but getting from point A to point B usually develops as I go along.

And for the speed round:

What book have you read and re-read, and read yet again? 

Any of the Harry Potter books.

Favorite song to play when writing a fight scene?

My "favorites" change daily.  Right now its "Awake and Alive" by Skillet.

Worst job?

Working a kiosk in the mall during Christmas.  It sold glass figurines, and the maneuvering space around the hundreds of very breakable merchandise was quite small.  I was like a bull in a china shop.

Best vacation spot?

Walt Disney World

Sweets or salty?

Sweet.

One thing most people don’t know about you – and would never guess!

I used to play the flute when I was a kid.  I was really good at it too, but my instructor stopped teaching to have a family, and I never went back to it.

Mmmmm... another smexy man in this series. A series that doesn't really have to be read in order, but trust me... you don't want to miss one of these smexy, caring, alpha, hot (oh insert more smexy pronouns here) men! All of the previous were introduced into my harem (Proof: Dare, Trace, and Jackson) and Spenser Lark also has a spot saved for him.

Now, even though I was happy to be introduced to Spencer, I have to admit, the one I really wanted to meet was Arizona. She was a curiosity to me. She survived such horrific circumstances and yet was strong and still wanted to help as many people as possible. Yes, this is a woman I wanted to know.

We find that both characters have some personal blocks in their past that wasn't allowing them to live a full life. In Spencer's case it was a wife that he dearly loved, but could not save. Now he has met the one woman who refuses to be saved and constantly puts herself in danger to save others. Together they learn to open up to each other. What I loved was not the healing that Arizona had by being with Spencer but the healing that Spencer found with Arizona. It was unexpected to him and that made it just feel more true.

I give this book 4 1/2 stars. I throughly enjoyed both characters and this was a wonderful addition to this series. I recommend all these books for anyone who loves a action filled romance.

This is the video that has gone viral. It's about the atrocities in Uganda. If nothing else, it's something better to get upset about than the little things that occur in our own lives.

There has been lots of criticism of this video. Not all of it makes sense, I'm sorry to say. However, there is a couple of well done articles out there. One is from Michael Deibert who writes for the Huffington Post. It was the first one I saw. This post at least tries to bring to light the history of the problem and specifically why he is against it. Also, another well thought out post that isn't exactly against the video nor the message, but does make sense of what so many were criticizing in such a bad way. It's by Musa Okwonga who has family that lives there. So he obviously has a big stake in what goes on in Uganda. His post is HERE.

So, if nothing else, I think it is important to take away the two things that everyone seems to agree on. One that this atrocity should be known and two, that Kony is evil. That is why I decided to post the video. Also do find out and check out what else is going on in Africa. This could be a jumping off point in people caring what happens all over Africa.

1. I love Leif Helgarson, Viking Vampire, Esq. I have to say that combo makes a pretty cool attorney. If you could have a paranormal/mythical beastie (or combo) covering your tuckus in court, what would you choose and why?

I would definitely take Leif. Beta male in his clan which means he is second in charge. Which also means that no human could EVER make him flinch. Good thing to have around in court and in other areas of law in which they woud try to bully you.

2. The police show up to question Atticus about his Irish Wolfhound, Oberon. If you could own any dog breed, what would it be and why? (P.S. Oberon is going on my list of favorite sidekicks!)

I have actually wanted a Irish Wolfhound. If it wasn't for the short lifespan and the massive hip and elbow problems they have, I would have gotten one by now. There was one in our animal shelter. I almost took him, but couldn't because my house is full. A rescue group got him. 

My dobe is a pressie from my parents. I adore dobes! He's my first. Clowns and they are so sweet. Not for the unexperienced dog owner, however. 

3. Malina Sokolowski and the other Sisters of the Three Auroras coven have my antennae up. What is your opinion of them?

Tricky! Yep... summed it up in one word. :D

4. Brighid, goddess of poetry, fire and the forge, gave Atticus the power of Cold Iron, which can be used to fight off that nasty lilttle hellspawn. If you could wield one magical power, what would it be and why?

Oh that is a hard question. I'm not sure what is all up for grabs. Hm... I like his magical eye. Reveals what is hidden and I like that idea. I also like the idea of camouflage. Oh and the magical hair! Never have a bad hair day. I think I need more time to explore this world to decide. LOL

5. The cops show up at Atticus’ shop to search for poor Oberon, who remains magically hidden throughout the ordeal. What is the one thing you would do if you could remain hidden from sight? I want to hear some good answers for this one!

I don't know. I know... not a good answer. I don't really like being voyeuristic. Plus, knowing me, it wouldn't work anyway. I'd giggle or cough or something to give me away. However, I would probably find out what others were saying behind my back. Sometimes, though... it's so much better to not know for certain and live in ignorance. LOL

Btw, ending this week on chpt 15 was so mean! Just sayin' ;) LOL
