Mark of the Sylph (Demons of Infernum #2) by Rosalie Lario Blog Tour

Half-demon Taeg is desperate to free his pregnant sister-in-law, who is spellbound to an indestructible book that will create an army of the undead. He is convinced that an ancient sword can destroy the book and the spell forever, but this relic has been hidden for a millennia by a powerful glamour. The clock begins to run out on his search when an old rival goes after the book and Taeg’s family in his quest for revenge.
Librarian Maya Flores has a secret: she’s immune to magic and is well aware of the supernatural beings prowling the streets of New York City. Haunted by a brutal demon attack that took her family, she is on a one-woman mission to destroy the evil demons who did it—and any others who get in her way.
Maya is Taeg’s best hope for uncovering the sword.
Unfortunately, she wants nothing more than to kill him. As he fights for her trust and to save his family, she is forced to face the truth that not all demons are evil. And the worst part? She might be falling in love with one, too.
My Review:

I read the first book in this series, Blood of the Demon, (review linked) but that was quite some time ago. So, I forgot most of what had happened. Luckily for me the book was written in a way that I wouldn't have had to read the first book to understand this world (although that never stopped me before... LOL). However, toward the end of the book, some of the things came back to me. Still, I would call this one a standalone, but you will probably want to go back to read that first book.

I did like both the main characters Maya and Taeg. However, a good portion of the book was dedicated to both Maya and Taeg wanting to get together and yet pushing each other away. I know that a lot of people like this kind of tension, but after a bit... for me, it got old. Even after saying that, I have to admit that there needed to be quite a bit of that or I wouldn't have bought her trusting him at all. It's a hard balance to create. I also thought that she trusted him too early in the game. Even so, in the end her trust didn't feel false. I know, I do sound a bit conflicted with this book but that's not always a bad thing. :) It kept my curiosity going.

In the end I give this book 3 stars. I find myself really liking the world here and I really liked the characters including the secondary characters. I'm guessing all the brothers will get a book and I'll happily read them all. I recommend this series to PNR fans.
I received this eARC from the publisher and no compensation for my review was given.

About the author:

Formally trained as a corporate and real estate lawyer, I practiced law for 5 years before finally admitting to myself that negotiating contracts wasn’t nearly as fun as dreaming up stories. As an avid reader of romances and supernatural stories, I knew I wanted to write urban fantasy and paranormal romance. Tales of vampires, demons, and other supernatural beings ensued.

I’m currently working on the Demons of Infernum series, a series of paranormal romance novels featuring four sexy half-demon brothers and their reluctant heroines.

When not writing, I enjoy spending time with my husband and son in our home state of Florida, as well as searching out things that go bump in the night. I still haven’t found any, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

If I ever do find evidence of the supernatural, it remains to be seen whether I’ll jump around in excitement, or run screaming in terror (but I’m betting on the latter)!

  1. I don't know how well I'd deal with this will-they-won't-they dance of the two main characters. It all has to me timed really well, or I tend to get angry and drop the book altogether.
Then again, I don't read that much PNR to begin with, so I think I'll probably skip this series.
I'm glad you enjoyed it for the most part, though.

  2. it's funny I wouldn't have thought it was the second book of the series while seeing the first cover. So different! It's great to be able to read it even if you forgot the first one. I'm always like that, terrible when you need to know everything.

  3. I am almost done with it and agree whole-heartily with what you said! It is a solid world and the story is pretty good.

  4. The push and pull of it -- I can only stand so much. I usually end up wanting to yell at the characters, "Get ON with it, already!!"

As for the cover (because you know I have to comment when there's a shirtless man on it) -- ooh, SHINY! :)

  5. As always I read your review with much interest but feel that alas this probably isn't a series for me. Still, never say never if I was to see this in the library curiosity would probably get the better of me and, if nothing else, I have a friend who would love it.

  6. The balancing of tension is ALWAYS difficult! I find that it depends on my level of irritation BEFORE I started the book whether this tension grates my nerves or not!!

  7. Wanting to get together but pushing away can be delicious but frustrating.

  8. Hmmmmm. I love tension Amanda, but the push-pull type of tension (as opposed to the flirty, "I wonder if/when you'll kiss me next" tension) drives me absolutely crazy. I can tolerate a little bit, but when it continues on and on I get frustrated, so I'll likely have that issue with this book as well. Other than that though, it sounds good!

    1. SO. I just called you Amanda. Probably because she's the next tab. I'm so sorry. I fail at life. FORGIVE ME MELISSA!

    2. I don't think you will have the same issue as I did.

Btw, being called Amanda is one of the nicest things I've been called... ;) LOL

  9. I'm a big fan of the back and forth, the will they or won't they, so hopefully I would like this book! I know I LOVE the covers. :-)

Great review, and thanks for the giveaway!

  11. I forget things SO fast! If I don't read the books back to back or like a week apart I start forgetting things. It's nice this one could stand alone!

  12. I have seen this one somewhere else. I thought you had reviewed it because yours is about the only blog I follow that reviews PNR and UF books, though Candace does occasionally. Maybe I saw it on Goodreads. I know I read the synopsis somewhere because I wanted to know where the baby daddy was and why he wasn't doing the rescuing! Guess I'll have to read, right?

  13. It is a balance. If it takes too long I'm frustrated - too fast I don't buy it lol

I alos hate when it takes a long time to get together and the HEA is crammed into the last chapter.

  14. Hmm, I kinda remember the first one, but don't. The review that is. Huh. But glad the book reads so you don't have to remember it all. :)
