The Immortal Rules (Blood of Eden #1) by Julie Kagawa

In a future world, Vampires reign. Humans are blood cattle. And one girl will search for the key to save humanity.
Allison Sekemoto survives in the Fringe, the outermost circle of a vampire city. By day, she and her crew scavenge for food. By night, any one of them could be eaten.
Some days, all that drives Allie is her hatred of them. The vampires who keep humans as blood cattle. Until the night Allie herself is attacked—and given the ultimate choice. Die… or become one of the monsters.
Faced with her own mortality, Allie becomes what she despises most. To survive, she must learn the rules of being immortal, including the most important: go long enough without human blood, and you will go mad.
Then Allie is forced to flee into the unknown, outside her city walls. There she joins a ragged band of humans who are seeking a legend—a possible cure to the disease that killed off most of humankind and created the rabids, the mindless creatures who threaten humans and vampires alike.
But it isn't easy to pass for human. Especially not around Zeke, who might see past the monster inside her. And Allie soon must decide what—and who—is worth dying for.
Vampires? Zombies (well, zombie like creatures... I'm calling them that)? Dystopian? Julie Kagawa? Oh yea... you know I wanted to read this book and I tell you I wasn't disappointed in the least!

This book was very thrilling, gripping, emotional and just plain fun. I was on the edge of my seat several times and I was totally invested in Allie's tale. It was a book that was hard for me to put down. Oh yes... if you are wanting a dark paranormal YA book, it's this one. Julie Kagawa knows how to write suspense and darkness. You will love it.

There were secondary characters you will love/hate/feel ambivalent about. Yep, it runs the gammit. Some you were certain that they were evil, but really even if you hated their behavior (Jeb, *cough*) you still see them doing the best that they could with what little information they had. You weren't even sure if the the goal certain groups had in mind were true or even possible. So the frustration you felt during their journey was intentional and well crafted.

I don't want to say more because I am tempted to spill the whole story. I give this book 5 stars and suggest that everyone read this book. My biggest complaint? The cover and the vid look nothing like the character of Allie... but that isn't the fault of the author or the book.
I was given this eARC by HarlequinTeen and no compensation for my review was given.

  7. I HATE inaccurate book covers. There one of my all-time biggest pet peeves. And, yes, I understand they're not the fault of the author, but they still irritate me to no end.

Um, I seriously overfed your fishies.

  20. I can't even really look at the cover because the blood creeps me out so much. If I had a hard copy, it would definitely end up hidden! I did really enjoy the inside of this book though.

  21. I really and truly enjoyed Allison. I liked her struggles to survive, and her inner strength, and her stubbornness and unwillingness to give up. Even when she becomes a vampire, she decides early on that she will be a different sort of "monster" and not hunt humans for sport; she is determined to hold on to what's left of her soul and her humanity. She is a wonderfully strong heroine, and I loved that the author wasn't afraid to show her faults; they made her a more real character, and someone that I was really rooting for the entire time. I really appreciated that we got to see Allison's struggles with her vampirism; this is so often overlooked or glossed over in vampire books nowadays that it was just nice to get a bit of realism (or, at least, as much realism as you can get when dealing with fantastical characters).
