Question: Your books have a cinematic quality to them and your main character, Ken, had often dreamed of pursuing a career in writing screenplays. What are your top 5 favorite movies of all time and why? Would Ken’s be the same or different and why?
Answer: Awesome question! I love movies, and they’re most certainly a passion of mine. Here would be my top 5:
- Dawn of the Dead – Because it’s the ultimate zombie tale and a perfect example of metaphorical moviemaking.
- Doctor Strangelove – Because Peter Sellers was a genius, and so was Kubrick. Also, you’d be hard-pressed to find a movie that’s more sarcastic.
- Network – “I’m mad as hell and I’m not gonna take it anymore!” Need I say anything else?
- The Godfather – The definitive “guy movie.” Just perfect storytelling, and there’s a subtle sensitivity underneath the violence that’s beautiful to see.
- 2001: A Space Odyssey – Another Kubrick flick, another flash of brilliance. I’ve always loved the message of self-exploration, and the metaphor in the closing scenes, of one man’s life playing out against the creation of the universe, is heart wrenching to me.

About Silas - goodreads, amazon, B&N, Indie Bound
Robert J. Duperre, author of The Fall and Dead of Winter, now presents Silas, a contemporary fantasy novel.
Ken Lowery is a man at odds with his life. He hates his job, is disappointed in his marriage, and feels resigned to leading a mundane existence.
That all changes when his wife brings home a rambunctious Black Labrador puppy named Silas, who forges a remarkable connection with Ken and begins to heal his inner turmoil. When some neighborhood children start to go missing, he takes it upon himself to protect those around him and is thrust into a surreal world where monsters roam. Not everything is what it seems to be, he soon discovers, including his new best friend.
Robert J. Duperre is a lover of literature in all its forms. Be it horror, fantasy, science fiction, literary fiction, or even romance, he delves into it all and relishes every minute of it. It is his desire to show this love of all genres by creating wide-reaching stories that defy classification, that can reach the widest possible audience.
Robert lives in northern Connecticut with his wife, the artist Jessica Torrant, his three wonderful children, and Leonardo the one-eyed wonder yellow Lab. You can read more about Robert and his views and ideas by visiting robertduperre.com.
My review for Silas will appear tomorrow!
What a pity I can't enter! Fabulous giveaway!
ReplyDeleteGreat guest post! And the kindle cover is such an awesome prize :)
ReplyDeleteYes, The Godfather is awesome. Dawn of the Dead is also fantastic! Got to love those movies. ;)
ReplyDeleteOkay, I have an embarrassing admission. I went to school for film, got my degree in film & photography, but I have seen none of those movies. Fail. The Godfather I refuse to watch due to the whole horse head in the bed situation, I know that movie is brilliant, but I just can't bring myself to watch it!
ReplyDeleteMy first comment is to Jenny: Jenny, you will never find a bigger animal lover than me. When the horse head comes on-go to the bathroom, know that it's fake or cry like I did. Take your pick but the original movie is classic.
ReplyDeleteMelissa, I cannot wait to see your review on this! Any book with animals, I love-I cannot tell you the tears I cried over Shiloh, Old Yeller, etc... I think that's a big reason why I read Dean Koontz for so long because he always had Goldens in his books that were a major part of the story.
I've seen all of those movies except Network? It's not ringing a bell? I'll have to look it up!
Looking forward to your review :o]
A great guest post. Do you know I have never seen 2001: A Space Odyssey. By all accounts a great film, I've seen in on many bloggers top 10 of films, I really must watch it sometime.
ReplyDeleteThank you for this great post Melissa and for hosting Rob today!
ReplyDelete@Nic: You can actually win a Kindle3 including the cover, not just the cover alone :))
Thanks for hosting me today, Melissa! This was really quite a fun question to answer.
ReplyDeleteAnd Jenny and Petty, there are tons of movies I haven't seen, as well, so not watching any on the list is SO not a bad thing!
Thank you everyone for responding, and to Danny and Heather for organizing this whole thing! Much love to you all...
The Godfather rocks!" Good choice :D
ReplyDeleteUuuum... Dawn of the Dead is EPIC! Fabulous choice!!! Win!
ReplyDelete@Kristi... oh I usually avoid those that make me cry. However, I do suggest you read Silas! It is good!
ReplyDelete@Danny... I wish she could, but she isn't in the areas for the giveaway. :(
@Robert... Thanks so much for stopping by!
THis is a cool idea for a giveaway. :) But The book sounds pretty cool. And great question and answer too. :) Thank you!
ReplyDeleteThe Godfather's a great choice. Not just a "guy" movie though!
ReplyDeleteI love that movie list. It's definitely heavy on the 'guy' side but those are films that can be enjoyed by all.
ReplyDeleteNow I'm off to put my DVD of Dawn of the Dead on. I'm suddenly in a mood to watch it. :)
Dawn of the Dead rocks! And a kindle giveaway! Eeecckkk!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the fun:) I am haunting this tour and would love to read Silas.
ReplyDeleteWould really like to read this one!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the post.
