Being with Him by Jessica Inclán

Being With HimFrom Goodreads:

They are here among us.
Far from home, gifted with special abilities, hunted for their powers. And they are desperate to find their other, the one who completes them.before it's too late.
Sometimes, Time Really Does Stand Still
Mila Adams has always known she was different. For as long as she can remember, she has had the ability to shift time, and who would believe that? Certainly not the obnoxious blind dates her mother keeps foisting off on her. But Mila can't help feeling there's someone out there for her, a soul mate who might understand her unique ability. And when she looks into the dark eyes of financial whiz Garrick McClellan, she can't but feel her time has finally come.
Any man would lust after a beauty like Mila, but the moment Garrick touches her-feels her shifting time just as he can-he recognizes her as his partner in power. Their connection is immediate, passionate, raw, and beyond anything either has ever experienced. But who are they? What is this gift that joins them so intensely? Are there others like them? And why do they feel that time is running out?
This sounded like a fun paranormal. However, I would classify this as a sci-fi romantic adventure. Mila is an insecure beautiful woman. Now, sometimes that can frustrate a reader, but in a way made sense. She is rejected for essentially who she is whenever she reveals a bit of her powers. I did like that by the end she was more confident, but not as much as I would have liked. Garrick has Mila's powers in the opposite direction. He has also been rejected, but his rejection was by his own parents. So, both feeling lonely and connecting on a level they never thought possible, find themselves belonging to each other. And as much as they both want to run away from those feelings, they are drawn by them as well. After finding each other, they find who their true enemy is and what they are after. The pace picks up and they find even more people like them. Together they must find the "others" and solve their collective problems.

I have mixed feelings about this book. While the world-building is good, it was hard to really connect to her main characters. All Garrick could think of is sexy-time with Mila. And she was always willing. It was just too much and ended up being not sexy at all at times. The ending felt odd. It was like a cliffhanger that wanted to give closure. You are left with many questions and although parts were wrapped up, it felt rushed.

I give this book 3 stars. I really enjoyed the world-building and am curious as to how the author might chose to take her characters now since this was published in 2008. I received this book from the Goodreads First Reads program and was not compensated for my review.

  3. Hm, it's too bad the characters don't quite live up to the world building on this one! I would get frustrated as well if all the hero wanted was sexy time with the heroine, there needs to be something else to connect them, and connect us to them. Nice review though, I appreciate your honesty!

  4. Hmmm...A guy who can only think of sexy times! That is so typical. LOL!

Seems like I've been reading many books lately with a soul mate vibe to them and it always makes me kind of doubtful. And I know I wouldn't have liked the cliffy/closure ending.

Though I think the cover is super hot, I think I could wait on this one, but thanks for the great review.

  5. @Missie and Jenny.. well, it was at times that just didn't make sense..

Like we are in clear and present danger ... eh, don't need to keep our mind in the game, just on each other. A little would have worked, but it was just too much. :)

  6. Hi, Melissa--

Thanks for taking the time to read and review.

This book "is" the first in a trilogy, so these characters are not over yet, nor is the entire story. I think that is part of what you were sensing in your review.

    Best,

    Jessica
